I usually do like vertical 4ths,horizontal 16ths,vertical 64ths, etc. so I'm always folding 1x4 or 1x2 rectangles in half(to reduce corrugation) if I want t end up with mountain valley mountain valley mountain valley mountain valley mountain valley mountain valley mountain valley mountain valley mountain valley mountain valley mountain valley mountain valley mountain valley, well yoou get the idea :D
If I'm doing a grid fro a tessalation with valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley valley or mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain mountain then there is NO corrugation effect, and I just fold 64ths directly.
There is almost no corrugation on a hexagon, which is interesting...

I have had several attempts at the magic star now and what I do is to mark off the grid points around the edges of the paper and then score the creases with a ruler and the blunt side of a pen knife. This helps me make all those folds a lot more accurately. Probably cheating a bit but I'm only a poor noobie.
