Tutorial for making a square from a roll of paper

Post by Benlewisorigami »

Hey guys! So I've seen several times on this forum people asking how to make a perfect, large square from a roll of paper. I made a video because someone PM'ed me asking how to do it.
Here's the link to my tutorial:

Now any kind of knife, razor, or even pizza cutter works, but the one thing that's pretty necessary for a perfect, even square is a carpenter's square. You can find them in local hardware stores, or online. I use this one. It's only 8 dollars, and works like a charm.

Sorry for the kinda shaky tutorial because I had to use a tripod and had to keep getting up to zoom in and out, but I hope this helped at least one person.

Happy folding!
Ben

Cool, I've been trying to use scissors, and I end up with wably edges. About your foil tutorial, can I use foil that says "Heavy Duty" on it? It's from Costco. Thanks.
I finally got it to say something under my posts!

You should use a knife if that happens.. or really really sharp scissors. And you can... but I prefer the cheap dollar store brand. The heavy duty tends to cost more, and your tissue foil wont end up as thin. It will be a lot thicker. If you can, try to go for the normal foil as it works better

I get perfect squares from rolls just by folding. The two edges of a roll are ALWAYS perfectly parralel and you can easily get two perpendicular creases. Then I tear along those two creases and voila!

Tear and perfect are two words that don't fit together.

Ill grab some the next time I'm at the dollar store. The heavy duty stuff is just what I have on hand. Thanks.

Tearing does not work with tissue paper or plain foil, but works great with paper backed foil, kraft, normal paper, wrapping paper, heavy duty packing paper,... The edges are very slightly ragged (there's about 1/2 of a millimeter variation) but perfectly straight.
