To cut my paper, I just use a self-healing cutting mat (24"x36") with a 1" rectangular grid and a steel straight-edge. I use the grid on the cutting mat to line up the paper and the straight edge and cut one side at a time with an xacto knife.

i sometimes use paper from my dad's workplace. it is brown paper, kinda like craft paper, but <30gsm. Each square is about 33cm. It is used to dry sediment on (metallurgist)
speaking of origami. .

I usually fold complex models, so I tend to use paper 10 inches (25 cm) or bigger. I'll sometimes experiment with 6 inch kami, but I do a lot of experimenting with 10 inch, then move to 15, 26 or 30 inches (75 cm) depending on the project. I make a lot of final versions in roughly 22 inches (55) because that's the largest I can usually cut a handmade piece of mulberry/unryu tissue paper.

i use three sizes

Post by 飛竜 »

for all testing i use those 15 cm squares

for intermidiate models i always use 25 x 25 cm squares

and for the complex stuff like cooper hawk ancient dragon phoenix etc 70 cm squares in fact i cant do ancient dragon with 70 cm square
(well i can, it just looks horrible  )i need bigger more resistant paper

theres no point in doing really small origami unless it looks impecable like its supposed to look like with its suggested folding square size.

Hi all...
My work is with models with a grid of more than 64, and lots of diagonals. For eg dragon like creations. For that i need 50 cm size.

True, though not, by me, satisfactorily.

Out of curiosity, and if you have the time, patience & inclination, could you post folds of the Dodecahedron & Truncated Icosahedron from "A Plethora of Polyhedra..." out of 6 inch kami?

I'd like to see it, and how cleanly it can be done.

I struggled even at 10 inches for those two, the paper just got horribly ugly - 10 inch baking paper was fine though.

NB: To answer the question of the Topic, these days, always 5 inches square for everything - unfortunately, this means there are a lot of models I don't fold.
