Need help figuring out what to do with a 'four square' base

Post by Cadix »

Greetings. This is my first significant forum post, so please forgive any mistakes.

I've made some modifications to Kawasaki's four leaves that go along with his rose. Specifically, I've narrowed the section joining the four flaps that make up the leaves (see images below). The four flaps are largely independent, but they do have thick parts along two edges and, obviously, are joined at one corner.

I was hoping to make four distinct models (preferably variations on some traditional designs), one from each square flap. But it is looking like having one corner of your paper fixed in place is more of a handicap than I thought it would be. I did manage to get a (very crumpled) swan and the front half of a crane folded, but I am having trouble reproducing the swan, and am not entirely pleased with the crane.

So if anyone has ideas what one might fold out of the base pictured below, I'd love to hear them. I'm new to origami design and am thus rather pleased that I've managed to come up with something at least mildly interesting, even if it is a modification rather than a completely original idea.

Also, if anyone knows how to accomplish this more elegantly, please let me know.

Thanks,

Tyler
