viewtopic.php?t=568 for example.

As far as slideshows and presentations go, I simply don't see the advantage over traditional diagrams. As opposed to a simple video, that method would provide tagged locations marking the beginning of each step, but it seems like it might be better to seek out a way to do that with video. If you are really dead-set on doing this and looking for ways to release diagrams in different formats, great-go for it! As for me, contact me when you have the specifics ironed out (i.e. what venue you are going to be posting these diagrams through, what formats you want, how you are going to encourage people to diagram for YOU instead of for one of the already established sites, etc.). I am currently diagramming for Origami Weekly and an upcoming Ohio convention, and I already have a full plate.

Thanks for your feedback JonnyCakes, and also OrigamiGianluca and Ben385; it has really helped me a lot.

I want to leave this thread for anyone that wants to keep on discussing about my idea, and I want to open a new one where I ask each of you for your help, and explain in a more detailed way the favor that I'm asking you.

Thanks to each of you for your interest.

PD: To the moderating team, please let me know if it's not ok to open a second thread for this; although I hope it isn't a problem.

Please use the existing topic and do not open up a new one. It isn't necessary to split this into further topics. Or to say it differently: If you decide to open up new topics on this subject don't wonder if they vanish as soon as a moderator sees them.

The website in process and the favor I ask of you

Post by Gerardo »

So here it goes...

Regarding origami, I'm a virgin in a lot of things. I felt so small with the level of expertise in so many sites in the web (I still kinda feel it when I interact through this forum ). Still, in my life I've invented a few very modest figures and I would love to teach how to fold them.

Looking for other starting designers like me I found a boy through the web who invented his own origami dinosaur. He was very pleased to know I wanted to learn how to fold it, so he drew his diagrams in the software called Paint. I sent him a photo of his figure folded with my hands a few days ago, he was so excited.

That's why I want to invent a transitional website for shy beginners such as myself; a starting place that'll help take a step towards the VAST origami world... whether you're a starting designer, a starting folder or even a starting figure :P. Starting designers can invent their own instructions of their figures and post them; starting folders can learn with original and simple figures, and starting figures can show themselves so they can be folded by very different hands.

But the site must already include instructions for a fair number of figures for its opening day in order for it to be successful; that's the reason why I'm telling you all this. I know that many of you are used to teaching how to fold your figures in books and events. That's why I'm only asking you to teach how to fold your simplest figure; it doesn't have to be a contest winning one. I'm eager to see the posted instructions encouraging shy designers to teach how to fold their own figures; if this site gets them just one very small step closer to becoming experts like many of you then everything will have been worth it. I think there's nothing wrong with what I'm thinking or what I ask of you. For now I only count with Robin and his dinosaur Paint diagrams, someone from South America that offered teaching how to fold his Griffon through photos starting from his crease pattern CP, and I, with my instructions for my super easy figures; for now I just have instructions for my very very simple box. I hope to find at least 10 designers and 20 figures before opening the site; there’s still a long way to go.

So, that's my situation in a lot of words. If you aren't tired of reading me and you wanna know what kind of instructions you can share in this site in process, well basically it depends on your creativity: it can be in a Word, Power Point, PDF file; in a illustration, photo, video; with or without animation, with or without symbols, with or without words, and in one or more languages... after all, they're your figures and instructions, the important thing is that starting folders can understand them.

Just the fact that you've read me to this point is a compliment, but I'll be even more grateful if you also want to help me and the future site's visitors with a contribution.

Sincerely,

Gerardo

Thank you to those who have contacted me :).

A PRICE! The figures of the first instructions offered for this collaborative site will become the very image of the site; they will become part of its design, including the name of the figure and of its designer next to it.

It applies to those that have already offered their instructions and to the next ones that will.

ANOTHER THANK YOU GIFT! I'm adding a special section recognizing those who helped making the site a reality. You become part of this section by helping find a designer that wants to share his or her figure's instructions.

This recognition is for designers, but also for non designers who helped by finding a designer willing to contribute :D.

To include you in this section, it's important that the designer confirms that you recommended him or her help this web site in progress with his or her figure's instructions.

It's been a while since the last post on this topic, but I've got an idea. The plan that Gerardo came up with, wasn't so bad. We could make a new topic, where designers could have their own topic where they give links to online diagrams/videos/CPs of their designs! Since everyone has his own topic, questions will be easy to answer, every designer checks on his own topic to see if there are any questions. Maybe an idea to think about?
