Does this mean that if the forum didn't exist, you wouldn't make origami?
no i've got friends at school to show off to :P but they don't understand you know? an origamist knows how hard something is and the effort for the shaping and sizing the paper and stuff. normal people just dont care about that stuff, thats why i like having more than one gallery. because lots of people on the forum see it, lots of people on flickr see it, and some people on my facebook see it. on this forum i got like 3 comments about satoshi kamiya's turtle. on facebook i got a ton!
and that is why multiple gallerys are usefu.

Take it for what it's worth, I'm still venting... :)
Signed. That would be very good. You can look faster through the special themes to find the next model to fold.

How about those galleries that are coming up lately about a single model? I guess the people who open those threads think that their model is so special that it deserves its own gallery

i think when new posters do that, it's just a lack of basic netiquette rather than presumption about how great the fold is. one potential solution is to have some kind of sticky requesting that if you're going to make your own gallery, you should at least plan on making something resembling a reasonable attempt to cultivate it and make it grow.

I think all the galleries are useful. The what have you folded lately? gallery is nice to see what everyone has been doing recently, but if I wanted to see all of an individual's work, I would of course go to their personal gallery. I rarely visit the Flickr galleries, but it makes sense to link to them. Since it's an outside website, I don't really see it as overkill.

I don't mind double-posting between "folded lately" and your own gallery, I reserve heavy commentary and extra pictures for the gallery and just a nice picture for folded lately.

What I mind is that it looks like everyone who joins here feels the need to create a gallery in the first place, especially beginners. I don't think I'm being snobby, it just cheapens the "gallery" section overall.

I understand the point there, but it's also the beginners who benefit the most from "heavy commentary" if people take the time to give their advice. I guess a lot of people don't expand their galleries, but it's easy enough to ignore them since they never get bumped up.

I do understand the importance of getting feedback with your models. A great example for this would be Joshua; his folding and picture taking skills have improved tremendously since he joined the forum.

Do y'all think that subject-specific threads (i.e. Fish, Birds, etc) would have the same effect that the personal galleries do in getting comments and feedback?

I would imagine both galleries would have similar feedback. Subject-specific threads might be helpful in different ways, though. For example, people who want to design a specific model could go to a gallery like that for ideas/inspiration. Sometimes it helps to see different versions of the same subject in one place.

Errr... i personally heavily support the idea of personal galleries.
First of, abt 3/4 (and a third of the active posters) the people in this forum don't have flickr, which probably has the most personal origami galleries around. And many have displayed their deterrence towards it. Thus, this makes the forum and effective medium for at least displaying a gallery of works.

And so let say we keep only the 'what have you folded lately' thread, things will get immensely messy. C'mon, that thread has 500 pages. It would be tremendously difficult to find works of of specific authors, and if that person posts like say, once a week, you would be going through 10 pages before finding that model And that's if you don't get confused by the other photos around it.

Thirdly, i personally feel that the 'classification' by type of model would eventually transcend into another 'whyfl' tread. It prevent's origamists from displaying their indvidualism and/or progression in their works.

And of course, if you absolutely hate galleries that much, just avoid them. Just click on the 'what have you folded lately thread', which is stickied and avoid personal galleries. Let the others have their own fun.

Thats exactly what im trying to do! ive made a gallery ALL HAIL THE BIRDS for everyone to pool in their bird models and i was thinking of doing it with other popular animals as well as it could really help folders. imagine that a young intrepid folder couldnt work out what to fold all he had to do was to go to the origami forum and go to the gallery page. There he has a wide variety of different types of models DOG , BEAR etc. and inside he will find different bear models and comments that could help him become a better folder! so come on ! help make this idea grow cos i think we are onto a winner here. :D
I just read a list of 'the 100 things to do before you die'. I'm pretty surprised 'yell for help' wasn't one of them...

I see a problem with your logic here... Pictures (besides avatar images and smileys) aren't hosted here on the forum. The pictures you see are pulled from other places: flickr, personal sites, etc. In order to display a gallery of works here on the forum, you need to at the very least have a stockpile of photos on a different site, if not a separate gallery to pull from.

I use Tinypic. There are single upload websites everywhere. And I find Flikr lame and useless. I'm sure a lot of people had galleries on here before on Flikr.
