I think he stated in his first book that he started designing by simply improvising.

Mir numann. Have u read ods? In that Robert j lang says that people knew about these techniques before ods.
If u say that people didnt know about these techniques then how did they design their own models? im sure they knew about these techniques before ods

The ods systems of design aren't the only ways of design.

Hmm...maybe I should be clearer. Yes, they did know some of these design techniques before ods, however Kamiya would have had to be either a child genius or have contact with some origami-mathematicians to have access to these. And back then, I don't think there were quite as many as there are now (Correct me if I'm wrong). And although Kamiya is a genius, I'm not sure if at an earlier age, without any thought from other mathematicians, he could have come up with that.

Okay, now I'm sort of tired, so I'm not sure if what I just typed supports my perspective or if it even makes sense, so sorry for any errors (for there are probably many)

Kamiya doesn't use any designing technique. he designs all of his models in his head

I dont know why i am getting into this.A Kamiya model without design technique would be simply pathetic. What i mean to say is that Kamiya is a genius. Every model of his has such beautiful and intricate design technique in them. He has used 22.5 degree technique, 15 degree technique, box pleating, polygon pleating even traditional bases.

If all the techniques he uses is not complex math then i dont know what is. Maybe not as much as Mr. Lang but still the amount of geometry involved is phenomenal.

if you are a member of the fold (origami USA) youd have access to the article written by kamiya about folding irrational proportions. some would consider this complex math, while others may not. regardless of that, kamiya uses these proportions when designing 22.5 based models to achieve foldability.
