Wow, I've never gotten any negative reactions before. Apparently you work with a lot of ignorant narrow-minded people. Try not to show them any girly or simple origami. Only bring the really cool ones like mythical beings or guns. It normally prevents people from mistaking you for a homosexual. And origami is like any other art. The ability to create art is what defines us as human beings (I got that from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) If they cannot learn to appreciate art, then they must be evil robots sent back from the future to destroy humanity. I'd carry a gun around if I were you. Or maybe a bazooka.

That's...mind-boggling. I've never had anything even close to that -- there's the occasional comment (implied, rather than said directly) that I'm spending an unusual amount of time and energy folding, but even then, the people almost always admire the end result. At work, I've even had people come by my desk just to see if there's anything new on it...and I don't do any particularly complex or fancy folding - high intermediate at best.

Lucky you. I often get comments about how I'm wasting my time or how silly Origami is. The only time someone was really amazed by Origami was when I gave her a kawasaki rose. Other than that, my girlfriend kinda cherishes everything I fold ( even cranes ). I've also folded a couple of really simple models for another friend of mine, because her brother had some sort of presentation about Origami. He got an A for it, partially thanks to my models, so I guess it felt good to have helped someone. Most of my friends, however, mock Origami and say that I'm wasting my time..

Hey, that's excellent, people do that. I only ever have one model, on the outside corner of my cube, and if it's a new one, people do shuffle over and hover about. They don't say anything, so I don't know what they think, & I would never ask, but there must be some sort of latent interest.

I was at a conference this week, and the last few speaker were a bit too detailed... So, before I left to catch my plane, I had a little time and asked a friend to let me have two dollars. He said that he would need them for toll, and I said that I'd give them back.

I folded a nice $2 Pantsuit by Rachel Katz, while he watched, then I handed them back. "What do I do for toll ?" "You can easily unfold them" Was my answer..

And his answer to that was to fold his fingers in a way that would not facilitate unfolding origami models ;-)

I think he appreciated my model, and I got the desired effect....

Yes I find that people don't want to admit it's cool in front of a group of people, but when they are alone, they are very into it. I always try to be encouraging no matter what. I tell people they could do the complicated folds too, all it takes is dedication and practice.

Sometimes I fold something in the restaurant (at the end of the...). One time waiter pick the model with serviette and other stuff on the table and trash it without any reaction. But usually, especially of nice young waitresses, is reactions very positive. Last days I am folding Floderer's form from serviette after YouTube. And again reactions are very positive, from waiters and waitresses and also from my colleagues around the table.

Actually, there is a name for goobers like them. They're called "philistines". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philistinism

I wonder what will happen if you leave an Ancient Dragon on the table. The waiter will probably pick it up, examine it casually, roll it up into a ball and eat it...I mean throw it away.

It's unfortunate to see that some people are poked fun at simply for using their brains for something creative like Origami. I've only ever been mocked by my siblings, who just joke around and say "couldn't you do something more productive?" or something, but if I tell any of my friends or classmates, they definitly give me positive feedback.

Most of the comments are like mentioned in the original post: "Wow! You actually made that?" or "That's only one square? How!?" I find that the feedback encourages me to continue with it :-P
