I rarely use my brain for anything so I guess that origami is in my blood.

most people actually dont notice when i fold...except for this one time during the school year, when i had just became intersted in origami and the only model i knew was montrol's tryranasourus (i dont think thats spelled right). anyway, i would usually fold one during class , cuz all my classes were complete jokes, and then just leave it on the desk. THEN one day i was folding the school news paper, and because of the large paper size it caught my classmates attention, and one kid was all "oh, you make those? i keep seeing them EVERYWHERE, my friends always hand them to me, there always in the halls there its SO ANNOYING!!!!" and i was like  oooookey then...

I find that people are much more interested if you compare it to something they do... I have a freind who plays around with 3-d render software a lot, and we have all sorts of fun geeking out about polygons and how to generalize a figure into triangles.

When I went to school everyone loved my origami and would beg me to make them models. I would make a lot of 'rice cranes' they called them because the completed model was about the size of a grain of rice. Those were good because I could fold in my lap with the teacher never knowing. I would teach other kids how to fold simple models like the tulip and crane and jumping frogs. It came to a point where I had to learn new simple models to teach them haha .... good times. Now my husband just hovers over my shoulder and asks me over and over like a little kid "Whatcha makin? What's that gonna be? Is it almost finished? Is it hard? Will you make me cloud from ffvii?"

Lucky you Teri, my husband feels i am wasting my time doing origami. He would always say 'nice' initially but now just sees through the models as if they don't even exist. I was never doing it for him anyways, so it doesn't matter anymore. But being a housewife i am dependent on him to buy stuff and so am folding only with copy paper  , I badly need to take up a job to support my passion, origami.

Oftentimes, folks are intrigued enough to politely ask me to teach them how to fold a model.
Most commonly, they expect to learn a complex turtle or elephant in 15 minutes, and are noticably disappointed when the process takes longer.
I believe that they have good intentions, but are frequently unaware of the time & energy commitments.
May I wish success to all who cope with the mountains & valleys of Life,
with all its peaks & depths, as well as Origami .

Paperz, I am so sorry to hear that your husband won't buy you paper! It's not like paper is so expensive. I think we need to send you some good paper so you can continue folding!

Thanks so much notefolds, i bought some tissue papers from a store nearby 'Costco' for about $8, but now i am waiting to buy some methylcellulose...but i should do it only in cash (i have saved some over the past few years of marriage). I am thankful that i at least have access to the internet. The connection to a printer has been removed and so whatever i fold is from the screen. For me Origami is very soothing and takes me to a different world and my worries seem to dissolve.

I am planning on teaching kids in my neighborhood some simple models (traditional) over the summer so that i can make some more money and meanwhile apply for jobs too.

the mosy annoying comment ever is when someone mistakes your model for something else..... Especially when u think u finally folded it perfectly.... Lots of people confuse Robert Lang's scorpion for a lobster. My reaction is something llike *wow how can u be so stupid? Lobsters have antennae.....*

Hmm... I get a lot of
"You have too much spare time", but I never get the
"You're wasting you're time". That sounds extremely rude. :x

People are usually pretty appreciative or in awe of my origami. That's why I keep a miniature Maekawa's Devil on me at all times :P (folded from thin 6-inch paper).

I usaually get only positive feedback, all my friends are appreciative of art, and they enjoy seeing the things I've folded. Mostly I get "oh wow, thats neat", or "holy crap thats so cool". Sometimes I get "man you have way too much time on your hands" or "you must be so patient". Once I gave a maple leaf to a girl I know, who I had previously given several models to. She admired it, and then proceded to partially unfold it and refold it, in an attempt to figure out how it was made. It would be nice if more people were that inquisitive, because the prigami community would grow a whole lot faster.

If you can't fold it, try a bazooka.
