Animals that haven't been done...yet
Hi there,
After looking at the beaked whale by black terror (viewtopic.php?f=15&t=8787&start=30) wich is an animal, I had never heard off. And since I've seen some models of not widely known animals I thought: Let us try to make a list of animals where there is NO known origami model for.
Feel free to post your animal, if you can with (a link to) a picture and maybe some information. Off course the goal is to get some inspiration and for anyone who wishes to design the animals that have been posted. And maybe even learn something about some species you never heard off.
I'm looking forward to see a origami model of every species this world had to offer.
EDIT: This is a list of the animals that haven't been done... yet

Re: Animals that haven't been done...yet
There are over a million animal species out there, but many are close variations of each other. For example, there are over half a million species of beetle. So there are plenty of insects out there that have never been designed, but not all would be interesting to see... One I would like to see that I have never come across is a hoverfly.
I personally think that birds are under-explored in origami. Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few designs around, but many focus on very "obvious" subjects like eagles and parrots, or are quite simplified. Birds are a hugely varied bunch, lots of opportunity for inventive designing (e.g. colour changes). I'd love to see a hoopoe or a shoebill stork, for example.
There are a few groups of animals that are very obscure and many people have never heard of, like caecilians and water bears. Caecilians look pretty much like earthworms (though they are completely different) so would not make for a very interesting model, but water bears might be fun.

Ok this is a nice start. I took the liberty to find some links to pictures of the animal and take a quick look to see if there really isn't a origami model already made.

Re: Animals that haven't been done...yet
When I made this topic I had mainly mammals in my mind, but it is very nice to see other animals aswell.
So far I'm liking the maned wolf (would be great with a colorchange on the legs and mane) and the shoebill stork most.
BTW Chris_t, I agree that there aren't that much bird designs out there. And of course all animal species are close variations of each other. This goes especially so for birds, they tend to look alike when made into a origami model. The birds you mentioned have got really eye catching features, a lot of birds don't. For bugs I'm not to sure, but lets say you make a donkey model and a horse model. If you made the model right, you could distinguish the both from each other. I think that's the big challenge in making a good origami model. You should be able to see what animal it is at first sight.

I'm surprised that neither Robert Lang nor Quentin Trollip have designed a shoebill stork

Re: Animals that haven't been done...yet
I was almost sure I saw a origami shoebill stork once, but I couldn't remember where. And since I went to the zoo a couple of weeks ago and saw one in real life, I think I thought 'hmm, that stork looks great as a model'. Maybe I got got confused and thought I or someone else already did that model.

Re: Animals that haven't been done...yet
you guys do know that, as of last count, there are at least 8,000,000 different species of animals on the earth.
just thought you should know.
just thought you should know.
Re: Animals that haven't been done...yet
Well, that depends whom you ask. There are less than one and a half million KNOWN species of animal. But there are various estimates for how many species are still out there to be discovered - some of them as high as 100 million. But very, very few of those will be mammals or birds.
Mammals that have not been done in origami will be much harder! I can't find any results for "origami potto", but it would be very hard to design one that didn't look like a sloth.
I see what you're saying about birds, roodborst, a lot of them would look very similar in origami form. But I still think there are plenty with distinctive shapes that don't receive much attention. There are a couple of designs for origami bird of paradise, for example, but far fewer than you might expect. And as you pointed out in another thread, where are your namesakes, the origami robins?

I agree that there aren't a lot of bird designs. Since you really seem to be into different types of birds, please post some pictures of the birds you would like see, I'm looking forward to be amazed.chris_t wrote:I see what you're saying about birds, roodborst, a lot of them would look very similar in origami form. And I really really really want a good robin model!! I found like 3, and they are very basic, as we already mentioned, they could be any number of bird species. But since that's another topic let's keep this one the ones that have no model as of present day.

I'm gonna do a maned wolf if I can. I need color-change practice anyway.

You want distinctive animals? Well, there's some of these off the top of my head (I interpreted distinctive as unique characteristic or unfamiliar name):
Flashlight Fish: http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lv79i ... o1_500.jpg
Civet: http://cdn1.arkive.org/media/08/0868CDA ... y-view.jpg
Zebu: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oQ4ugkdNFYk/T ... d_calf.jpe
Oar fish: http://seavenger.info/wp-content/upload ... arfish.jpg
Arrow Crab: http://www.reefnews.com/reefnews/news/v ... rwcrab.jpg
Lung fish: http://onemoregeneration.org/wp-content ... -25-11.jpg
There might be versions out there, but I haven't seen them, and a simple google search doesn't bring any of them up. I wish I could see these folded sometime, especially the oarfish and the civet.
