Hello,

I've started experimenting with crimps, and had the thought to combine them to make ripples and ridges, which I've seen used before, but usually with only one crimp at the edge of the paper.

Here's my first two attempts at having multiple crimps or crimps in the center of the paper:



I have two questions:

1) Is it possible to create any set of ridges and ripples using only crimps?
2) Does anyone know who has played around with this before?[/list]

I've come up with an application, though I'm not sure how well it will turn out in the end.

I'd like to spell my god son's name out of one sheet of paper. Here's an "A":



I'm going to keep experimenting... maybe something interesting will come up. If this has already been explored, feel free to point me in the right direction

I've played with this kind of thing before, I even used it for my entry in this month's challenge, but generally only using one pleat, or sometimes two but they always touched the edge of the paper. I've never tried making letters like you're doing though.

A similar technique is used in Eric Joisel's book of origami masks or faces.

I've been cleaning things up. Later today, I'm going to put together a diagram of the reference points I'm using for the A before I move on to other letters. My long term plans (which may or may not be realized) include trying to make different 'fonts' and to come up with a program to find the best places to put crimps to make a certain shape.

That A is starting to look pretty clean and nice now. Good job!

It's not quite the same thing, but I saw pics of someone else folding 3d letters and even words a few years back.

Wow, those are really impressive! Thanks for linking those. Much cleaner than what I'm doing in the end, but it looks like a somewhat different method. I'm hoping to differentiate myself by getting curves in the letters and using only this one type of crimp.

Yeah, what he does is a very different method than what you're trying, just thought I'd show it to you because it was interesting.
