A new model? *CP now online*

Post by Anine »

Hi!

Some of you in here know me and some don't. I've been an origamist since '94.
I folded an origami version of a cut, folded and glued massproduced giftbox. Now I need you to tell me if this box has been designed before. I'm using video to show you the model since it's has an opening sequence http://youtu.be/Ran2eYXtGUk
I've mailed the mailinglist too but not sure if it worked out..
Thanks in advance!

I can't see your box, so I don't know. Tomoko Fuse has created the most boxes over the years (she is to boxes what Robert Lang is to insects :-) ). Rick Beech and Florence Temko have also published books on boxes. On the other hand, I don't know of any cut & glued Origami boxes.

If you reverse engineered from a public (non-Origami) box, and you don't intend to "sell" it, I suggest that you diagram it and take your chances. If someone recognizes it, simply apologize and move on. In our Art, there are lots of duplications, some of them are better folding sequences, but they can lead to newer and additional interesting models that are original and also further the Art.

That looks like a neat little design. I like the way it opens and closes.
I'd love to see diagrams so I could try folding it myself.

Why can't you see it? Does it show an error message? I can take a series of photographs instead maybe.. the video is because it closes with a twist and it's difficult to show that on photographs. I love origamiboxes since I started doing origami and have books by Tomoko, Beech and Florence Temko and don't think I've seen the box in any of my books but of course I don't know all boxes that have been designed over the years.

Sorry. I can see the box, but it's dark when you open it. Doesn't matter, I'm not a Fuse expert, so pictures wouldn't help.

My suggestion still stands: Publish it, accept the credit, document the influences (even the cut&paste one), and be ready to apologize if someone claims previous credit. On the other hand, if a second party refers you to a previous model, but your diagram sequence is different and unique, there's nothing wrong with honestly coming to the same result through two unrelated paths. In any case, it provides a jumping off point for further exploration and invention.

I think it's cool, regardless.

Quentin Trollip has a similar box but I couldn't tell if it's the same due to how dark it looks on the video, maybe you could do another video?

Here is a new video of the box and how you open and close it. I used a flashlight to show the inside. It's one piece of duo paper (thick scrapbooking paper). http://youtu.be/o4r_wQiOPxc

Ah, I can see it much better in that second video. Very nice!
I like how the walls become the lid as you twist it closed.

Here's a video of the original cut and glued giftbox (maybe not that similar after all? But it's this one that inspired me) http://youtu.be/35j96c7C0M4

Dribalz commented on youtube that I was blocking the main action and it wouldn't let me reply so I'm doing it here instead. Here is the main action more clearly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPIZmqnITdI

Sorry I can't help you with your question. I just wanted to tell you I LOVE YOU BOX!

I actually had a similar idea recently but I discarded it (thinking it would be too hard to create :P) and ended up creating my recent trihedon boxes.

I would love to learn how to fold it... I would love it even more if you showed how in Neorigami... haha ;)

The video that shows the original uncut box is marked as private and the rest of us are not allowed to see it.

By watching your new video I concluded it is not as Quentin Trollip's box.

Hi Anine
Very cool box!
It is definitely different from a box I designed some years ago.
But, ironically, I saw a very similar box (if not the same) from a folder when I was at the AEP convention in May.
The creator's name is Angel Ecija Blanco.
I do not know how to contact him, but maybe you could ask for help from the AEP.
And he didn't really speak English.

I am unaware of the ethics when it comes to designing an existing model. If the existing model was not influencing your design in any way, then I would suggest that you could call it your own.
But I still feel it necessary to try to get in contact with the above-mentioned person.

Good luck and well done

Anine, I can help you contacting Ángel if you wish, I often exchange messages with him :)

About this, you should look for where it says: "I composed my own origami design and then subsequently found a published model that’s very similar. Can I publish my design?

Hi!

I've now published a CP (while I work on the diagrams) of my one piece twist box on my Swedish origami blogg. What I forgot to add in the text/on the CP (will add that later) is that you need duo coloured paper and the side facing upwards will be the colour of the lid.
Here you go: http://www.pappersvikning.blogspot.se/

Comments are welcome :)

Anine
