I've looked through various threads here at discussion about design software best suited for diagramming, but I am curious what people are (relatively) happy with given today's current crop of software. Freehand is out for me due to running OS 10.7 and 10.8; MS Paint and Word are not up to the task in my opinion. What do you recommend?
More to the point, what are those of you who produce many diagrams using? What do publishers use or those who submit "camera ready" diagrams use?

Adobe Illustrator - the best but expensive
Inkscape - good and free
AutoCad - only for people who work with it non the less, for everyone else too overloaded with unnecessary features and too expensive

Canvas is still a viable option, though quite expensive these days. I use an old copy for all my diagramming.
