Color change designing

Hello everybody!

I realised that there are more and more origami designs that make use of color change techniques and that make me wonder how are they being designed. I started to think about what the possible thought processes are. One of my best friends loved an anime character and i would wanna try to make a color change flat model (lie the /)for her. I had also tried quite hard to make it but have failed probably because of my lack of knowledge in this area.

Can someone please give me a helping hand on how to design color changing models for example color changing flag models that you can actually find on the internet and that they are also very impressive. An example of this kind of flat model color change could be the exit sign found at all places also.

I will appreciate those who are willing to help me in this area and i can post the completed model if i can with your help and give credits to you. Thank you very much! :)

I love color changes! I use a few techniques, let me see if anything I have helps:

1. Any flap touching an edge can be outside-reversed-

2. You can get complex shapes just by shaping the outside edges, then folding them inward to make an image where they meet up-

What parts of the model do you specifically need help with besides color changes? I'm willing to help you with the design process if you want.

As far as color changes go, I basically second what Kareshi said. I also would advise you to learn more about layer management. If a flap needs to be color changed, force it to lie at or near the edge (it doesn't have to be, but that's a pretty advanced technique), depending on the color-change needed. Maybe do some trial-and-error folding as well to get accustomed to the different patterns that can be made by folding different ways.
Also, pay attention to diagrams and where the colors end up during certain steps. I'd recommend looking into Marc Kirschenbaum's work if you haven't already; many of his models make abundant use of color-changes.

This is what i am attempting to make and it looks a little far fetched for me. It is the colourchange at the face that is giving me the headaches. Please , if you don't mind, can you state very briefly how you may wanna create this model. Thank you.

I will also venture into his work to see the different techniques and his works are superbly clean :)

I was intending to make No Face myself one day! I'll see what I can do. Do you have a deadline or just whenever?

Joseph Wu made a no face if you want to check it out. You can always try to contact him about it.

From the pic you posted, I'd suggest trying out with a fish base and just fiddling around with one of the large flaps.

One very basic but effective method for color changing is using a blintz and then partially unfolding said blintz. It works for specific models with their main subject protruding from the center of the paper, like in Shin Han Gyo's Rose Box:
