Beginner Models With Scales

Hey guys,
I have never folded any models with scales, but I would like to start. So what is the best scaled model to start with? I was looking at Devil Cobra by Kade Chan, and it looks doable, but the paper size is simply out of my reach. I am not a beginner at origami, just scales. I've simply never worked with scales before, but would like to start. Thanks.

Kawahata has a nice scaled fish too.

Not scales per se, but do try out Beth Johnson's Acorn as it uses a tessellation to give a texture to a model.

Lang's Tortoise and Koi from ODS. The book also teaches you how to graft scales to pretty much anything.

yes, it is probably the best book on origami design ever written. IMO at least.
Know that with the Koi you don't have to fold as many scales as he says. Work out for yourself how many you really want to fold and use that for a trial run at least. This can help limit the paper size that you need too. If you try to fold 300 scales in the middle of a 15" square sheet - good luck with that. A hundred or so on the other hand is very doable.
