What do you usually do with your best folds?

Post by Gerardo »

Ok, so we're in love with origami and we love to fold new models and we usually go crazy about folding newer and newer models. Know what I mean? In a few words we love to fold simply because we really enjoy the process. But then there's also the result of the process -the folded piece- or simply the fold as we sometimes call it. We strive to make them each time look better, more professional. Right?

So my question is about those professional looking folds (folded pieces) we achieve. What do you do with them once their ready? When you have the intention of giving it your best to fold a model, what are you usually thinking of doing with that fold once it's ready?

I only ask because I was pondering a bit about origami as a trade... yeah...

My models aren't that great simply because I don't have (much) good paper, but I've found that I can get my handful of tessellation models to look really nice as long as I take extra time to do so. I always keep at least one of everything I design, but I prefer to sell my better folds when I can.
In the past several days, I've actually gotten three commissions for various tessellations. So, naturally, I'll do my best to make them look professional.

If it turned out good, the first thing I do is taking a photo. Afterwards it will stand around for a while until it either goes into a box for convention displays or into a box for storing. After being displayed on one or more conventions it will either change into a storing box, or if it is really outstanding it will get a space in our glass cabinet. Some models I will also give away.

Thank you very much kirakinn and origami_8! Origami_8, is your glass cabinet in your house?

So being photographed, displaying in the house, forming part of convention exhibitions, being stored or giving them away... do the rest of you do something different with your best folds? Do you do some of the things mentioned here? Please let me know guys.

And a related question: most of us fold all the time, in many occasions just for fun or as practice. In those cases we don't have to give our ABSOLUTE best to the folding process. In that context, when do you give the model your very best in its folding process? Is there a relation between your intention for a fold (folded piece) that you wish to make and the level of effort you place in its elaboration? For now I only know that's the case of Baltorigamist who tries his best when it's a comissioned fold :).

When do the rest do it?

Like Anna, my best folds are usually photographed. They serve as a template to diagram, or to represent a finished diagram. Afterward, the models usually get put in a box or a closet, where pretty soon they are no longer the best folds.

I fold only for one reason: to make happy a person and see a smile.

I usually gift them, but before i took a photo.

I've given away everything I've ever folded except a couple pieces made from paper I can no longer obtain, and a couple I framed and mounted on the wall.

Mine usually sit on my shelf for a while until something happens to them like spilling water on them, getting set on fire, etc. Most my really good folds are gifts for friends and I never really get around to taking pictures of them.

I would like to suggest a new topic for the gallery section called "Origami On Fire."

Thank you guys for all the answers :).

Wow... I can't imagine how they end up on fire.

Would you please also answer the other question? In what cases do you try your best when folding a model?

For me My moddles usually sit on my "Origami shelf" if they are good. If they are ok I will put in a box to give away to people, and if they are bad I usually recycle them.

I try my best when I am folding a modle that I think could look very nice, and for a design challange, and for a commiton "If I get one" or exibit.

I hope this helped (sorry for my bad spelling, Firefox is very slow for my old computer. I type a sentence then It shows up after, If I try to use back space it takes like a minut to backspace)
