A valid point, as most hats are silly, but I disagree:
A couple summers ago, shortly before noon, I started hiking a canyon in an open desert. I was stupid about it: I didn't wear any sunscreen and didn't have a hat. The hike was fun; however halfway through it I realized that I was getting terribly sunburned. I wound up taking off my shirt to wrap around my head, burning my chest and back instead of my face, but if I had instead brought along an origami hat or made one out of my hiking map (thinking specifically of Jeremy Shafer's
flasher hat), I would have been much better off.
