New-to-me tube tessellation

I've designed-by-playing-around a tube tessellation. Here's a picture:

I'm very happy with it. It locks into place, holds its shape, is symmetrical across the midline, doesn't have too many layers, and is a tessellation. This is probably the 5th rendition over the course of a long time. It's grid-y and not complicated, so a crease pattern is probably on the way.

I haven't seen it before, but it is too simple not to have been thought up already. Anyone know where it's come up before? (I should probably post a picture of the bottom which is where it locks...)

I'm planning to add some rings and/or tubes around it or maybe have it take a curved path. Or make an i-ching tile complete with a broken line or two.

I've made rectangular 2×1 grid unit flaps myself, possibly the same CP (I'd be able to tell if I saw the back side), but I never had the idea of making tubes out of them. It's an interesting idea and looks very nice, so even if the difference ended up as just a matter of shaping, I think it would still be a fresh idea. I'm looking forward to see a whole folded tessellation of this molecule.

Here's the reverse side:

The more I play with it the more I realize it is REALLY simple. The crease pattern should be easy enough.

Probably mostly correct crease pattern:

It's very similar to my flap (apart from the shaping) but not quite the same: I didn't squash the flaps at the back side, just left them as regular pleats.

Great minds think alike :-D

I decided to squash the back because 1) it adds symmetry which just makes me happy and 2) I *think* makes it stay flatter, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

Now, time to add rings!

And here's one version of a tessellation based on the tube:

There's relatively little tube per paper, but it's a start.

Never seen a curved tessellation. Love to see you fold it!

I'm not claiming it or anything but it's close to how I designed the base for Balance. Here's the CP drawn by origami_8: http://www.origami.at/diagrams/balance_cp.pdf

Just like mkosmul, I had not thought about using it for tubes either. Fold the whole tessellation cadix!
