The challenges of the October 2019 Design Challenge?

Post by Gerardo »

(I think this is the best subforum for this thread since I'm not proposing a new challenge here; I'm just using one as a conversation starter. Now, if this isn't really the best subforum for the thread, can someone please move it?)

I seldom participate in the monthly design challenges, but I've followed them for some time. I'm intrigued by certain practices I've seen in each one. Maybe it's just as common outside of the challenges... not that sure about that.

I've noticed people tend to participate with models based on concrete subjects: something they can see or have seen at least. This is similar to having a model at the center of an art classroom. You know? Aside from that, I've also noticed people tend to add a description of what the model is and how it relates to the challenge's topic. Models without descriptions are very uncommon in them. Why is that? Now, the current monthly design challenge is about not doing one nor the other: the model must express something the contender feels strongly about, instead of representing a concrete subject, and also, express that idea without adding a description.

I might be wrong, but I have this feeling that people haven't been able to express that through a single model. They feel they need more than one model, place the model as part of a scene, and/or add a description to relate it with what they feel. And that would be the reason for such little participation in the challenge during its basically first half. What do you think?

I love this kind of discussions; I'd really like to know what others think about it. Would you please let me know :)?

I love this challenge, but yes I cannot think in the abstract way this challenge needs. My sailing boat picture was depicting sailing into troubled waters which for me was the spiky waves.

The combination picture was about how new designs form from the bones of the ones that have come before.

Other thoughts I wanted to explore was finding the right box. Which was going to be different shaped boxes made from materials that were relevant to my past self at different ages. Again nothing that would allow me to participate with a single model.

Thank you Grace for your answer. Now people, please don't be lazy and just leave Grace to converse with me on your behalf :P... I'm kidding, but I really do want to know what others think! OK?

From what you're saying, I got the impression that your three ideas were all about your own thoughts regarding origami it self.

Not necessarily. Sailing into troubled water is a saying which can literally mean sailing into bad weather, but can also mean political dangers coming up ahead.

The second one was about the creative process of origami.

The boxes one was going to be about how I haven't always fit into other peoples expectations/roles growing up and how as I have gotten older the roles/expectations are better.

The limitation of only folding one thing is kinda hard because, as you said, if my message is "x is like y" it would be hard to express it with only x or only y.

However, I do have a pretty good idea in mind, although it's not quite an "x is like y". I don't want to make a promise I can't keep, but you can hold me accountable to fold it.

Gerardo, you are doing so much for this community by pushing everyone to design something new. I appreciate it, as I'm sure the rest of us do.

They are all very interesting concepts :o.

What makes you so sure about that? I ask because I really want to know your thought process :D!

But that's my point. What makes these origamists so sure that they need more than one model to express something like "X feels like Y"?

This definitely goes to my list of "most beatiful things people have said to me". Thank you! I'd really love it if origamists created more models like this :D.

Hi everyone. I wanted to ask you, what do you think about the readability of the current models participating in the design challenge? In your opinion, how good are the models at expressing what the creator feels strongly about?
