Geometric shape of Kawamura's "Butterfly Ball"?

Post by Gerardo »

What's the name of the geometric shape of Butterfly Ball, created by Kenneth Kawamura. It's like a cube but it has these pyramid-like holes on each corner. So the faces are actually squares but rotated 45°. Here is a picture on Flickr by sunmaid1: https://www.flickr.com/photos/sunmaid1/45257262332

After some searching, I am pretty confident in this answer: a 'cubohemioctahedron'.

This is based on a 'cuboctahedron' with the triangle faces sunken in. I initially wanted to call it a 'sunken cuboctahedron' but that isn't specific enough because you could sink the triangular faces or the square ones.
