Harbins Origami 1, 2, 3 &4 on ebay

Post by Nick »

I've just put a full set on ebay - item number 290020716591

Have a good laugh at the buy it now price - you never know how badly people might want it, and I need money badly, having just been made redundant :(

That's because someone bid already.
The buy it now price was GBP 85.00 (approx. $160.99), but as soon as someone put in a normal bid, that option went away. Generally that's expected with a starting bid of GBP 0.60 (approx. $1.14).

Nice sold price on that auction!

Last year I was able to get a copy of Harbin's Origami 4 in Hebrew from an online retailer in Israel. I don't know any Hebrew, but I was able to complete the transaction anyway and a new copy only cost me $10 CAN including shipping!

I figured I would never be able to afford a printing of the original English version, and I'd read on the British Origami site that it was still in print in that language:

http://www.britishorigami.info/academic ... nbooks.htm

Although there are times where a little english would be helpful, I'm still able to fold the models from diagrams alone. Something to note, there are a far greater number of models in that book than in the previous books in the series; and I think because of that, many folds are condensed into a single step making a model take 3 pages to fold that usually would take 8 pages in a book.

You might be able to pick up a used copy in English:

My copy of Origami-4 has an ISBN 0340218223, 186pp, and was published in 1977.

The correct ISBN is for sale $3 http://www.biblio.com/details.php?dcx=90715136&src=frg3
I suggest you check for details and list of models, if interested.

I think this is the same book: http://www.biblio.com/isbnsearch.php?isbn=0340218223

Perhaps another re-listing: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDet ... 0340218223

Many Harbin Books: http://www.alibris.com/search/search.cf ... 25&qsort=p
But ISBN 0340218223 is #22

A few copies of ISBN 0340218223 at various prices: http://www.campusi.com/bookFind/asp/boo ... 0340218223
Make sure that you ask for details and list of the models...

David Lister's overview http://www.britishorigami.info/academic ... nbooks.htm
provided info that I use for tracking them down.

but how can you be sure if it's actually origami 4?

For instance, you list:
-------
Many Harbin Books: http://www.alibris.com/search/search.cf ... 25&qsort=p
But ISBN 0340218223 is #22

------

ISBN 0340218223 is listed as 21 when I view that page (22 is ISBN: 0340109025 but probably they've changed order if a new one was added) but it has a printing year of 1970. Origami 4 was not printed before 1977. Without the "4" in the title, and the correct year, I would think that would not be the correct book.

Are there other things you use to to determine if it's the correct book? I was told before that with a lot of books in a series, they're listed with the wrong ISBN. Often the person listing it just addes it by name (and so books with similar names get the wrong isb put on them by the system).

Anyone know if that is true?

Origami-4 - Verifying a book

Post by HankSimon »

[quote="davjds"]but how can you be sure if it's actually origami 4?

That is an important point when buying any used book, sight unseen. I do the following, along with the ISBN verification, if possible:

1. Try to find info about the particular book online, or from review sites.
2. Try to get a list of the Table of Contents, or Index for older books.
3. I use something unique about the book, for example Origami-4 has a blue cover, 186 pages, Baby Grand on p. 83, Buddah - 101, Siesta-134. in my copy. No other book has that unique combination.
4. Then I send a query to the seller, asking about that info.
5. Before I understood this process, it took me 4 months to locate Origami-4.
6. Using this process, I located Origami-2 under a different name and Origami-3, listed only as Origami, The Art of Paper Folding in 2 days.
7. Having said all of that, Japanese books can be a bit harder to track down :-)
