A Joint Tribute to Neal Elias

Post by cavemanboon »

Hi all,

(Please disregard this post if u have already seen a similar one which we have posted to the O-List awhile ago).

A few months ago, four of us - Nan, Huy, Gabriel & Boon - agreed to set up a joint tribute site to pay tribute to Neal Elias. Due to work, school or personal commitments, each of us has been folding and progressing at different rates but the basic condition is that each of us has to fold at least 10 different Elias designs and set up his own personal tribute page for Elias. We would then set up a joint tribute site with, among other things, links to the 4 personal tribute pages and make the joint tribute site public on February 12, 2007.

Well, our site is now ready for public viewing, we think. But first, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave Venables, Dr Robert Lang and Michelle Buehler - Neal's granddaughter - for taking the time and effort to write forewords for our joint tribute site despite their busy schedules. Their write-ups about Neal Elias from different perspectives have given us a much clearer understanding of the great master. Dave, who besides providing us with useful background info has also graciously granted us the use fo his photos of Elias and also his photos of original folds by Elias.

We hope u will enjoy visiting our joint tribute site as much as we have enjoyed folding the models and getting the site ready for public viewing. Although the number of Elias designs that we are able to present in our site is still very small, we hope that this visit will in one way or another increase your interest in his amazing body of works.

Thank you and here is the URL for more details :

This is a great project! I must give it 3 cheers. But there is ONE thing that is lacking. I feel as though the site is lacking order. Wouldn't it be better to host all the images on the "gallery" instead of having to go to different pages? I'd be more than happy to help-please let me know.

Once again very nice of the members involved to give such a tribute.

hi wen fu kai, fancy hearing from u! i was just showing ronald koh the other day your interesting rendition of his blackmoor. btw, great homepage!

thanks for your feedback. yeah, we didn't have time to act on it but we did discuss briefly about the possibility of having all our renditions of the elias models on one page for convenient viewing. one of the reasons why we are using the present format of having links to our personal tribute pages is that it would be easy to maintain. whenever each member uploads new models or make changes to his personal tribute page, there would be no need to make major revisions on the joint tribute page per se.

i am personally not knowledgeable about setting up websites and huy, who is in charge of the technical stuff just learned about setting up websites after we agreed to do this project just a couple of months back! he is a bright young man who learned very fast on the job and without him, we would most likely not be able to launch this project this smoothly. in any case, the project is still far from complete. it will evolve further, we hope.

yeah, thanks! we would probably need your help and input. i will let huy and the rest of the team know about your offer and perhaps huy can even liaise with u directly - i am sure language wouldn't be a problem! but we probably won't be able to do much till after the lunar new year celebrations.

have a great lunar new year !

My pleasure!

To celebrate the Year of the Pig
cavemanboon, vohinhlantu, and others how about doing this challenge-may the best looking pig be given the name: "Best of Show" for 2007. It doesn't have to be original work. Just fun foldings. The purpose is to celebrate:) Are you in? Lets have a gallery up of all the pigs by the 28th of Feb.

Wen Fu Kai, you should open up a new topic about this! I know I'd be willing to participate, even though I know I wouldn't win. It could be called the Best of Show Pig Challenge 2007. You could have a different challenge every new year!
