Lang's Koi with scales

Ahh its been a while... not much folding but I was looking through my Design Secrets book and since i am kinda bored I am willing to spend a few days on the Koi. I followed some Diagrams on how to make the scales from an 8x8 grid and they arent too bad. I have been practicing the Koi itself alot and I think I am ready to start the whole thing. I would just need someone who has made it to show me the precreases/references and how to divide the paper the right way. Basically where to begin. Also some good paper suggestions would be nice.

Thanks.

I haven't folded it, but from looking at the CP and design, I can tell you you need some big paper. Just keep in mind that the pleats for the scales will take down the size of the paper by quite a bit.

Yes, i know im gonna need big paper I just would like to know where to make the pleats and once i get the pleats in place I should be good.

that isnt what im asking. I know how to make the scales. I folded it a few times from those pictures. I think to make the koi with scales you need to divide the paper into 30ths but not the entire paper. Only in the center. I guess my question is what part of the paper do i divide into 30ths.

I think this will provide you some clue.

OK this is my question...

The creases on that blue paper. That is what I am trying to find. I know how the scales are formed. I want to know how to find the 30x30 grid in the center of the paper.

If you look at the Koi CP in Figure 7.29 (Page 205) you have this basic pattern:

Image

What you are interested in are the distances x, y and z, so just measure them approximately.
Now you have to keep in mind that by adding scales the region y will get smaller so you will have to make this region larger beforehand as explained in Figure 7.30.

So, if the scales you are using are f.e. 38% larger when unfolded compared to the folded state (as the Scale in Figure 7.23) the distances you will need for the starting square are:

x / y*1,38 / z

If you put those in relation with the total side length of x+y*1,38+z you will get the percentages that the Tail, the Body and the Head section will take up on your starting square.

You can just measure and mark those on your square or use referencefinder to give you a folding sequence. You don't have to be overly exact though, because it doesn't really matter if the scales start and end a little bit earlier or later.

Hope that helps and was clear enough.

This may not be much help, but check out page 205 of Origami Design Secrets. If you look closely it appears that you are given plenty of reference points. Especially in the bottom figure. Between where the two black angled creases at the left meet the bottom, there are exactly three vertical divisions. That's one clue.

Another is if you look at the top figure. Look in the grey area at the top right, right on its edge is a scale line.

Hope that helps. I haven't folded the scaled koi before.

Also, you might consider to use a division of 32 instead of 30 because it's much less trouble to fold, and those additional 124 scales don't really make that much of a difference...

is the crease pattern on pg 205 the exact one? minus the actual scale formation itself. Are those where i need to make the pleats?

Ok, I've made the koi several times, and done a good few sheets of scales (thanks to Anna's guide).

Now, after reading the ODS guide to the scales I find myself scratching my head (again). Page 205, figure 7.30 - do I literally put scales on/next to the paper I am making the koi out of? Then use them as a guide for the model?

Also if anyone has done this model any pointers in general??

Any help much appreciated
