I am looking to buy some kraft paper, but I don't know the ideal basis weight for the correct thickness and such. Could someone help me? Is 30 basis weight too thick? I was thinking of ordering from Uline, but I am unsure. Thanks

30 what? cows? pigs? solar systems?

It's more common to specify paper weight in terms of gsm, so if you can find it defined in those units, that would be better.

But a more important question would be - what do you intend to fold with this paper?

I believe that 30 pound paper transfers to 44 gsm. Does that seem too thick?

so thats a definition we can work with, not everyboy on this planet uses the same measurements.
44gsqm seems to be a good allroundpaper for me. I folded a long time from 37gsqm kraftpaper and it did a good job for me. maybe you should ask for an sample.

BTW where did you get your kraft paper therealchris?

StarPartener, did you end up buying the kraft paper from uline? If you did, how is it? I recently heard they sell kraft paper and looked them up. If you didn't buy it, can anyone tell me if the paper seems ok? I have never folded with kraft paper before and wanted to try it out.

Resurrecting this thread with a couple of questions:

Has anyone used USPS or Scotch postal wrapping Kraft paper? If so, do you have any idea what the approximate weight is? None of the Kraft paper that has reasonable shipping charges lists the weight except some sheets that are either 35# or 60# (50gsm or 162gsm)... I figure the former might be suitable for basic folding (I'm just a beginner, working my way through the Maekawa book "Genuine Origami")?

And since it all comes in rolls that look fairly small, how do you deal with the curl in the paper?

My own notes on paper weights:

Newsprint and kraft paper rolls: 1 ream = 24x36 * 500 = 3000 sqft
poundage * 1.6276 = gsm
kraft 40# = 65gsm, 50# = 81gsm, 60# = 98gsm
newsprint 30# = 49gsm
raydiant = 50# basis = 81gsm ritecoinc.com
fadeless = 14g/2sqft = 75gsm pacon.com

I've used 50# (80gsm) brown kraft shipping paper for a few of Maekawa's folds, and the 75-80gsm Raydiant/Fadeless kraft for a few others. I found the shipping paper to be softer/thicker than the others, even at the same basis weight. A warm iron can take most of the curl out of the paper, just don't use steam.

Rabbit and Triceratops are the 50# shipping kraft. Dragon, Turkey, Helmet Beetle, and Devil are Raydiant/Fadeless. Eastern Dragon, Tyrannosaurus, and Pyramid were all white kraft, I think 40#.
