Hojyo Takashi's gallery was the first genuinely jaw-dropping moment I had in origami. So far, I've only folded his Buddha (ad-libbing on the hands, even).

Question is this, guys - what's a good model to attempt to do next, in terms of aesthetics vs difficulty? I'm not totally terrible at origami, but not that good either.

Well, all of Takashi's models are complex, but not all are supercomplex. The Shibaraku was the first model of his I folded, the CP was straightforward, but shaping is a nightmare. Same with his Icarus, which focuses even more on shaping. It is diagrammed, but I'm not sure where. His boxpleated models are for the most part easier. Gabriel is difficult boxpleating, God of Thunder is a little easier, and Aquarius, while probably his easiest free one, is boring. And yes, all of these crease patterns can be found online, just search the forum and google images.

To answer your question - go for Aquarius first, I know of people that successfully folded it with little or no prior CP experience.

Are you folding with diagrams or you only have CPs? Because there is a huge diference from following diagrams to just find the way to collpase the CP and do a good shaping.

The violinist, while tempting with a relatively simple CP and a nice finished model, is a nightmare to shape. I can't understand which points are which!
