well prefolds are (especially with more complex models) a nessity. a good precrease is kind of like a good strong foundation, without it your finished model will turn out strange and may be impossible to fold. as is the case with lang's pillbugg, the precreases do take a while but they are VERY important for collapsing it into a base that is used to create the many points that are the legs. they may be annoying sometimes but they are very important so just chug on through and just post again if you run into some problems.

You should get used to the pre-creases . Most complex models have them, and all CPs have them (are them, actually). If you are using a paper that takes well to doing mountain folds on folds that have been vally folded (And vice-versa [Papers like tissue foild don't do it well]), you can do the reference creases first, and then, if the paper is thin, and the model isn't asymmetrical, you can simply fold the model in half along the line of symmetry, and just keep the model folded in half during the pre-creasing. Half the work :). After the creasing, just touch up the folds that are not correctly MV oriented by creasing them the other way. It is a trick that I used to do in models that have lots of pre-creases, but I don't use it much anymore, as there is a point at which the model gets too complex, and the paper comes apart during the pre-creasing.
Just make sure that, if you do it, you do it very carefully

But, for not-too-complex models with lots of pre-creases, it will work :).

Reminds me of something I was told once...apparently someone didn't read the Prologue or Epilogue of a book...thinking they weren't part of the story...like the opening and ending credits or something...where do people get these ideas?
