Tant paper composition?

Just a thought I had...Does anyone know what type of fiber TANT paper is made from?

No, but I can tell you it is thick, looks very good, holds a crease well, and isn't wet foldable. Actually it kind of feels like wood pulp...

It is rather thick at 78 g/m^2, but it is wet foldable

I hear the only thing it's good for is wet-folding. And if it's not good for that, what is it good for!

I quite like it for tesellations as well. Plus the textured surface finish is really nice.

The Tant paper I found was like 150 gsm!

But I just pulled that number from nicholas terry's website, which is where I ordered my Tant paper from.

I actually don't know how thick that is relative to other papers, but i know it feels thicker than copy paper, kami, and foil paper.

I'm pretty sure its more like 90g/sm. I used it for a while and hated it, but then again, I don't like tesselating or wet folding, and tant wasn't made for complex stuff I like folding.. It was great for Komatsu's wolf though!

I tried wet folding it, and it didn't work that well... Oh well.

In my experience it wet folds fine. However, it may not be as suitable for wet shaping because the paper is thick and can have many layers so the water does not penetrate. Anyway, if it doesn't shape as well as you'd liked you can always apply MC.

Yeah, I agree. The ones I found were so thick that I didn't even buy it in the end.

However, some folders may beg to differ. Origami-artist-galen works magic with this paper, just look at his flickr stream.

Tant paper is excellent for models that require stiff paper like some boxes and other geometric models, for instance Philip Shen's table:

And the colors are bright and beautiful.

It's possible there is more than one type of paper we're talking about here. The stuff I get is really rather thin, like double the thickness of a sheet of kami, but stiffer. It seems as though it could be really heavily sized wood pulp.

And for the record, TANT isn't all that great for complex stuff...but is really perfect for anything really simple and expressive, like...everything made by Yoshizawa.
