Teaching an online class

Post by DavidLane »

I was wondering how many of you would be interested in teaching an online origami class (either plain text, prerecorded video, or live video, your choice) for some money.
You teach on whatever topic(s) you want (as much or as little as you please) and set the price per student taking your class. Out of curiosity, how much would you be thinking of charging?

Plain text is probably undoable, except if you have experienced students and are only teaching simple models (a bad combination, that).

Prerecorded videos are already available on video platforms (eg. YouTube) for free, so I don't know who would pay for watching these. [I guess they'd be willing to pay if you'd show a snip of video, wait for everyone to complete the step, possibly go into problems, then continue with the next snip of video. But this really asks for live video.]

I see some use in live videos. I think the most important part of a class would be to have the students (viewers) interact: they should be able to shout out that they're experiencing problems with a step, so that it can be shown again. Even more helpful would be a video connection, so that the teacher can sometimes tune in to what a student has / how he's performing a step (or at least trying to do so) / whether he's understanding the correct reference points.

As to price, don't ask me. Are you looking for people to actually do this, or are you looking for a quote to give others, because you want to teach online? Who would be the target audience? [No, I'm not really interested in doing this, I've got enough on my hands making my YouTube videos. But I *am* curious.]

Find some students willing to pay for online content, and I'll teach a class on whatever you like, in whatever format you choose :o

That is a serious offer, by the way, as long as you stick to origami-related topics.

Ditto what Andrew said. As for price there are a couple ways to go. Per hour, per class, etc. I wouldn't teach a 2 hour class to one student for $5 because that wouldn't be worth my time. But 20 students at the same $5 would be workable.

Please do contact me if you're actually able to pull this off. Our experience has been though, that people on the internet don't want to pay for anything. We had a survey for readers of our online magazine (Origami Weekly) asking whether they would be willing to pay for content and the response was an overwhelming no.
