Metallic painting

Hello,
Has anyone experienced with painting their origami with metallic paints before. I want to give my model a colored metallic feel. I don't know how else to obtain large sheets of colored foil, so I was thinking making tissue foil and then paint the finished product.
However, I'm not exactly sure how to go about this, because I have never actually painted my models before. I've made tissue foil before though, so that part shouldn't be a problem. So to get a smooth metallic look, would I be painting over the 'foil' side with a translucent colored paint, or could I just use some sort of metallic paint and paint over the tissue? Would it look smooth and shiny?
