what size paper would i need to....

i want to make a large shoe size gift box with lid. what size paper shall i use? i am new to origami

Try Tomoko's boxes they are very practic. You only need the saquares to be twice the zise of the final box. example: If you need a box 10cmx10cm you need 20cmx20cm squares
Or if you need a more cubic box you will need a 3:2 ratio paper (only for the lid) that would be 20cmx30cm and you will end with a 10x10x10 cm box

how about robin glynn's starbox. i think the video is on happyfolding.com and the diagrams are on glynn's site. although ive never folded this so i cant give paper recommendation.

The starbox is fairly unstable. I wouldn't recommend it as a box to actually hold anything in.
