Hi everyone,

I hope I posted in the right section. Sorry if I'm in the wrong section

I just have a question. I bought this folding package and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it's called. Here's a picture of it:

I tried googling the english name given to me, 'Folding paper handicraft owl', but it comes up with origami owls. I'm trying to find the english instructions to it. Everything's in japanese not sure how to put the pieces together!

This is golden venture folding (also known as Chinese Paper Folding or 3D origami). It is when many small triangles units are put togethor to form large structures. A common animal made by them is a swan.

That sort of papercraft is often called "3D origami" but I assume it has a real name - that i am, of course, unaware of.

(EDIT: Golden Venture, huh?)

a quick google search on the above turned up a bunch of images, including this one and a link to papercraftcentral.net. I've also seen many good tutorials on YouTube in regards to how to make the units and how to put them together. Good hunting!

Jadylyon, that's the picture of the package I bought too! It's supposed to be the finished result.

I think the term you're looking for is "awful".

now, now, frumious.

to me, this is just a subset of modular origami.

however, to me, they look like too much work. many modulars require ~ 30-100 units, but i believe some of these models require 100s-1000s, and i just don't have the patience. besides which, unless you glue all the units together, they all look very fragile, like a house of cards. one rough wind and hundreds of hours of work is ruined.

that said, i believe kimscrane carries multiple kits to make these things, if that is what you wish.

I've made the swan once, and I can tell you it actually holds pretty well together. It is boring to make 500+ modules though :/

Well, I have a lot of patience for this stuff. So I honestly don't mind putting together so many pieces. And it's my first time building it, so why not give it a try?

I appreciate your honest opinions about how boring it may be, but I won't know for myself until I try and it seems interesting to try something new
