Does anyone know if there's any difference between the 1st and 2nd edition of Lang's origami design secret?

Well, I do know there will be changes, but I'm not sure how extensive they will be. Some new content will be included, but I believe it's Robert's decision on how much will be shared here.

I can reveal this much, I believe: In early March Robert will publish an article, which hints at one change that will be included in the 2nd edition.

holy crap!,:shock: There's a second edition coming out? how much will this one cost? what are the changes? Any information will be helpful, as vague hints are not helpful, and after all, I don't want to shell out $140 for a book I already have most of the content for. it would be helpful if there were just manuscripts of the revised sections that you could buy, to save money.

Bookdepository.com has the 2ns edition on pre-order (205 days to go) for about AUD50

unless the second edition contains the formula that lets you convert ordinary paper into 0 gms paper of super strength, i highly doubt it will be worth another $50 if you already have the first edition.

I heard that Robert used a special Gamma Ray Laser to make the paper stronger when it gets angry, then treated it with thiotimoline to improve its solubility in high humidity, thereby reducing its weight as you fold the model.

P.S. You can also get paper samples by pressing the Test button on your FAX machine... but it has to be a single function FAX.

Why do you insist in saying that the book costs $140? Is it some kind of defamation campaign against Lang you are in?

About a year ago Lang e-mailed me a paper he wrote on elevation. It is hard to grasp since it is quite abstract, but basically it is about the distance of creases to the axis. There are several levels of elevation. If you check his recent cp's you see these levels all have different colors.

I am convinced this paper will be part of the 2nd edition as well as a paper that elaborates further on box-pleating.

Hopefully this will also mean more models are included.

His book on tesselations was listed also but seems to have disappeared again.

You could always e-mail Lang by filling out the contact form on his site. He is very kind and usually replies very quickly.

Yeah, a while ago.... to clarify some of my wild speculations ... Robert mentioned that he'd like to have the time to design a Treemaker-type program to design box-pleated models ...

Good idea - I might email Dr Lang. I just want to know because the aussie dollar is so high at the moment, I'd rather pre-order the book and wait about 9 months, than risk having the aussie dollar tumble later on and having to pay even more

Sure, but first, a caveat; its contents really aren’t defined till I finish it, which will be by the end of March. But the primary differences are:

(1) I’m removing Chapter 14 (all of the equations). This book isn’t the place for that level of math.

(2) I’ve greatly expanded the chapter on box-pleating and am splitting the result into two chapters. The “new” second chapter will go into great detail on polygon-packing and two types thereof, uniaxial box-pleating, and hex-pleating.

(3) I’m adding diagrams for some new models. Haven’t decided yet precisely which ones.

(4) Assorted small typographical errors are corrected.

(5) All of the figures, throughout the entire book, will be recolored to provide better contrast between mountain and valley folds in CPs. A few figures in early chapters get some additional colors in order to convey information better.

As for what new diagrams go in, a lot depends on the timing. I’m facing a hard deadline of March, so whatever I’ve completed by then is what goes in.

Dear Timoris, the prices are different in reason of the fact that the currency is different!! Remember that US Dollar is not the currency of all countries around the world.

Indeed.
Which is why I did all the conversions.
And as you can see, some are cheaper than others.
.ca being cheapest, then .com and finally .co.uk is most expensive.

Lets just compare in £ All three listings:
