Hey! im new to this forum but have been doing origami for a a relatively short ammount of time but do it constantly. Ive always folded other peoples models and very much wish to begin to design my own. I have done research into Circle packing,Box Pleating, and other forms of model design but have yet to design a model. I know there is Origami Design Secrents by Robert Lang which im sure would greatly help but I just wanted to know some tips and advice of how to design such lovely and amazing models as like i see all over this forum and the web.
There are other topics asking the same thing I couldn't find them so here's my advice.
I think the best way to start creating models is by modifying an existing model.
Other method is:
Take a complex model and fold it. Unfold it. fold it again, unfold it, fold it again. Check the process was it easier the second and third time? Did you find shortcuts for some steps? Repeating the steps on the other side was easy?
Then take a smaller sheet than the first time and fold the model again. Try to find shortcuts. Analyze what parts of the model are produced by what steps. Then start simple and try to apply what you've learned in designing something.
