Combining other materials with origami?

Have you ever heard of adding maybe metal or wooden boards to a model in order to give it more weight or strength? A year ago I was asking about that, cause I had created this unstable "flower pot" that fell down with a single flower. It had pockets at the bottom, so I thought I could give it more weight by adding nails inside the pockets.

So are there any other models like this one that combine other materials? Which one do you know? Does it actually mention it in their diagrams? What do you think about that practice (combining materials)? Do you think it's just like using scissors or tape in pure origami?

Have you seen Jon Tucker's Dollar Ryujin? It requires a wire.

And no, I don't. I think its sort of like applying varnish to a painting. Anyway, I hope I helped.

I really want to hear A LOT more thoughts in the matter. Could you (you who are reading this right now) please help me with my question?

Thanks for your feeback Jake! Are there any diagrams for the Dollar Ryujin? Does it mention the wire? Have you ever heard of other materials?

I think this is a really interesting topic, it can expand the concept of origami :)

Origami-shop is selling necklaces of origami models (is like a bird or something) and they are made of silver and gold. Also I think Dr. Lang has make his dancing crane with some kind of metal, you can see it on his website.

Yes, there are diagrams of this. It is in the Centerfold 2010 Convention Book, but i'm sure if you contact Jon, he will give you a copy (thats how I got mine). And I put wooden boards on the bottom of models as a stand. If you have any further questions, please ask.

I've seen tiny earrings with ksudamas on them and they look really effective, I've also seen rings with roses on them and all different kinds of necklaces

if i was folding a model i would definitely prefer to not use wire or glue to hold it together but if the model is flying/jumping then i think using wire to support it is acceptable

But that's just what i think :D

What I'm discovering is that some models can need more strength or weight to work and you might need to add something between the layers to accomplish that. What do you (everyone) think?

Thanks for your answer polistes. I left you a question in my thread about expert photo-diagrammers, could you please help me with it?

I know certain snakes (such as king cobras) would need to have some kind of wire or similar in order for their heads to be propped up properly. Like your post, it needs strength to be held or it would just flop over. I find it to have an excellent effect, since the aluminum wire I use can be bended to whatever pose you desire and whatever length as well. The wire can also be concealed within the multiple layers, so as not to take away from the model. My two cents. ;)

Great example. Do you know if they usually mention this in those diagrams?
