When you buy a book on your Kindle, you can download to your computer and copy to your Kindle device, or download directly to your Kindle. Either way works fine. Any books you buy from Amazon you can download multiple times as well, so most of the time I will download the book to my Kindle (using WiFi access) and then also download to my computer separately.

You can also side-load documents in PDF format that you obtain from other sites by connecting to your computer via USB and copying to your "Documents" folder on the Kindle, or you can use a custom printer driver to "print" the PDF to have it sent to your Kindle via Wi-Fi as well (Send to Kindle tool).

Don't get the kindle fire, it has abominable battery life. The touch is okay, but I prefer the original or the keyboard one.
