Thanks! It was a bit laborious so I don't think I will do a big tessellation of it anytime soon.

The flower is based on my previous "White Daffodil" design (the middle is painted not colorchange):

Dragonfly

Designed and folded by me.
One uncut square
38x38 cm bananafiber paper
22.5 degree ( I love those 22.5 degree insects :D )
This design is actually a few months old, but I never was satisfied with it, so a few days ago, I improved it a bit and found a good way of shaping.
This model has a relatively nice folding sequence with almost no precreasing, but you have to do lots of sinks and shaping is kinda difficult.
I used photoshop to make the Dragon"fly"

I decided to go for a classic czechoslovakian car, because it's close to home and probably my favourite car ever in terms of looks.

Tatra T87

The real thing had an air-cooled V8 in the back and three headlights in the front.

It's also got suicide doors in the front and regular doors in the back. how cool is that?

Despite being a limousine used by polititians, two reckless dudes have successfully taken it on expeditions to Africa and South America, which is probably the main reason why the car earned such a good name for itself and even international fame.

It has been voted as the best collector's car of 2010 by The New York Times

The idea that jumped first to my mind is that you put it on sharp table corners to child proof your house :-)

I'm guessing that's not it though ;-)

Is it for measuring mass? It kinda looks to me like a balance :).

YES! it is my design for an Origami Balance. It was indeed inspired by Gerardo's excellent and challenge winning design (August 2016).

I will let you ponder the logic of my design by showing the following two sketchup drawings:

Image

Image

I have turned the traditional design for a balance upside-down and added a visible reference to the measurement error that exists in any balance scale.

The more sensitive the scale - the more difficult it is to achieve balance. For example with some highly sensitive scales, simply placing the scale on iron or steel surfaces can impact the accuracy of the measurement.

The sensitivity divot is a visible representation of this error, Expand the divot and the scale balances more quickly but has a greater amount of measurement error. Narrow the divot too much an the scale will be nearly impossible to balance - breathing on one side could "Tip the balance".

NEXT UP - my multi unit origami scale that is better, but still far from perfect.

Using hanging baskets has been a common practice of balance scales many years – However:
You might have concluded from my last model that adding baskets will overcome the problem of weight distribution in an origami scale. However, with a one square model the baskets are directly connected to the balance and no matter how the connection is narrowed and weakened, the tenacity of paper will allow the transfer of weight throughout the length of the arms into the baskets. You must still place the center of gravity for object at equal distance. Probably, the model by Gerardo is better than the one shown above for that reason.
Turning the fulcrum upside down does remove one source of connection between the fulcrum and the plank so it might be considered an improvement and could be applied to Gerardo’s Model.

Now to get a better (not perfect) set of hanging baskets, I believe you need multiple sheets of paper. This type of “Origami Scale” was ruled out for the challenge because you could only use one square sheet of paper.
A second advantage of the Multiple rectangle fold is that you can move parts independently making it possible to recalibrate the scale for greater balance and accuracy, overcoming imperfections in paper and folding techniques.

Awesome firstfold! I in turn was inspired by Vicente Dolz's two models when I created Balance.

Mr Tortoise
Designed and folded by me.
88 by 88cm square.
I hadn't designed any complex pieces in a while so I made this. This model is a rough draft.
Check out my other designs on my website.
