Wet-folded from an 8 1/2 inch square of some super thick two-layer paper. 9 1/2 inches long. Wet-folded because I had no choice with such thick paper.

This has got to be about 4 years old by now. I'm finally happy with the photo.

The Fabled Blue Merlion



Blue Merlion. Folded from a 14 inch square of white unryu backed with indigo lokta. About 8 inches long.

I've been trying for weeks to get the photo angle right! This is the image I've had in my head since I decided to join the Merlion party. A fierce lion of the sea, in true blue, marine colors, swimming into the depths.

Thanks to the 5OSME crew for this challenge, giving me the opportunity to design something as original as this. I would have never thought to combine the images of lion and sea were it not for this competition.

Jared's is more suitable for a lion body.

Hers is like many others, however. See this, this, and this. While they are all very beautiful and nice designs, Jared's is different and stands out from the crowd, giving it a slight edge in the competition.

But the initial challenge was to make a merlion like the ones that can be seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merlion
In this point Jared's doesn't fulfil the challenge. It may be something special but doesn't really fit.

Anna, the head actually looks far better on the Merlion than on the Lion. The reason for this is that the head and mane are about as big as the whole lion!

Also, the challenge wasn't "Here's a Merlion statue. Copy it." It was to design a Merlion. Images of the Merlion statue were suggested as inspiration. Yes that statue depicts a traditional image of the beast, but why should the entries be merely clones? The challenge did not state "It must look like this" because where is the fun in that?

I'm happy to see that since my original entry, more people have been expanding their Merlion images. Joseph, Andrew, even Cheng Chit, the Singaporean and contest troubadour, have used similar elements in their designs.

And I'd much rather have something special than something that "fits".

I'm with Jared on this one. There are already enough entries in the challenge that try to copy the statue as exactly as possible... things are starting to look sort of "samey". Some novelty definitely needed to be injected into the proceedings.

Therizinosaurus



Folded from a 24.25 inch (61.5 cm) square of Thai Two-layer paper. About 12 inches long, measured straight across.

I've been trying to design a Therizinosaurus for a few years now, ever since I first heard of the odd dinosaur. I began work on this particular design in January 2010. After six months, it’s finally complete.

This was a lot of work to fold. My sheet of glass is only 18 inches wide, which meant I could not pre-MC the paper. I had to fold the base dry and then MC-fold afterward.

Therizinosaurus was a strange dinosaur. They were herbivorous therapods, and looked like a cross between a sauropod (like apatosaurus), carnosaur (like tyrannosaurus), and Wolverine from X-Men.
