Monthly design challenge July 2017

Postby NeverCeaseToCrease » July 2nd, 2017, 3:18 am

Hello all,

This month's challenge will be called "other art forms."

This can include a musical instrument, paint brush, pen/paper, etc, or an artist of any kind at work.
Or you can create something famous like The Thinker, the Alhambra tessellations, the Scream guy, the American Gothic guy/gal, poems like The raven, or song titles. You can fold either the title or something from the art piece itself. There are a lot of options and as long as you can somehow connect it to the topic it should be ok.

Lastly, I would also encourage you to try a style or method of designing origami that maybe you'd never tried before, like hex pleating, circle packing, curves and 3d crease patterns, or incorporating a tessellation.

As for the rules, you may use as many of whatever shape or type of paper you want, glue, tape, and cuts allowed, as long as you mention whatever you use. Since this is topic of other types of art, it would be more fair to not allow markings on the paper, unless your paper is textured or you're going to paint a solid color on it.

Good luck to everybody!

I have a really good idea for this challenge, but it's for a complex model with volume. That's the only way it'll look interesting. I don't create complex models; if you'd like to give it a try, send me an email or private message so I can explain to you my idea :).

Why won't you try designing a complex model yourself just this time?
Because it's not your habits, that's also (part of) a challenge! ;)

That was very good advice. OK, I created something for the topic. It wasn't my original idea... it's actually better :D.

Would life forms be acceptable? After all, life IS art.

Sure, I guess so
Although, it would have to connect to a piece of art that has been already made, otherwise this contest will just turn into any other previous contest
I just went to the Metropolitan art museum during a New York trip, and I think I've found inspiration...

You could do that but...

Image

There has to be a better way!

I think a better option would be to find a work of art with the same subject matter that you want to represent and find a way to make your model similar to that work of art. I did this in a challenge last year.

Image

My design could have just been a generic, grey alien but I wanted to specifically reference the illustration on the cover of Communion. All it took was choosing appropriate paper for the alien and the backdrop, then lighting and composing the image in such a way as to pay homage to the cover illustration.

I made the Lernean Hydra, one of the monsters in the Greek Legend of Hercules. This model was extremely hard to photograph so if it's not clear there are 9 heads. Also, the cp is in my gallery
I would argue that this counts as art because the story was told in ancient Greece through vases, engravings, poems, sculptures, and other art forms.

The work of art I've selected is the very influential video game, Wolfenstein 3D.

Image

I started by folding a fairly representative, if hopelessly abstract, hallway from the game.

Image

I then decided to add a few 3-D folds and set the model upright like a diorama, which gave me the idea to populate the little diorama with plastic army men.

Image

Et voilà, Wolfenstein 3D.

Here's my small analysis for the four submissions this month:

NeverCeasetoCrease: A nice model for sure. I would've liked to know if there was a picture in particular from which you took your inspiration.

dev1983: Any description worth mentioning?

Juston: The idea is very interesting and works as long as you consider video games as art (I do). Moreover, it can also work as perspective lines for drawings/paintings.

Gerardo: It looks like a traditional crane being sculpted out of a marble block, but I'm not sure without a description of the model...

So to summarize, juston wins for representing the theme better in my opinion. Congrats! =D>

It's literally that :D. Nailed it! It was very important for me to make a figurative model that didn't need a description to express its subject. Know what I mean? Any feedback about the fold and the model? I would REAAALLY appreciate it :).

If I may ask, Sunburst, why did you consider you needed the description to be sure about what it was?

Congratulations guys, especially Juston. Great work with the perspective; reminded me of Obelisk.

dev1893: I'd love to know what or who is Angle. Would you please let us know?

Thanks NeverCeaseToCrease for the challenge and Sunburst for judging ;).

Thanks to origami I became a very big fan of arts, especially visual arts. That's how I learned that lists of arts have been around at least since the ancient Greece. There's a current list that does include video games as an art form. The only reference I have about the list is in Spanish but I hope it helps, look for number ten: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numeraci% ... _las_artes

It took a while to realize what it was though
I just thought that a description would help for judging this theme.

@juston: you're welcome :)
