Monthly design challenge - Febuary 2018

Post by Merlyngami »

This month, the topic is Jungle.
I chose a relatively broad and simple topic, since they tend to get the most entries. It could be a jungle animal, a jungle plant, or any interpretation - just as long as it has something to do with the jungle.

I'll allow squares or rectangles for this month, in case someone wants to try designing something ambitous that won't work with a square.
Other than that, no cuts, glue/mc is allowed, no more than 1 square/rectangle. Multiple entries are allowed, but only one of them can win. Good luck, hopefully the design challenges will keep going strong and getting at least three or so entries.

Goldtiger will be judging this montgs challenge, and choosing the topic next month.

I've got a great idea already. Hopefully I can make it work.
After the fall, we rise.

The aztecs used to live in the jungle, so here is an Aztec Eagle Warrior. The whole thing, including the ankle braclets, sandals, club, and bird, are all from the same uncut square of 47x47 inch sketch paper. I used a 40x40 box pleat and I might upload a cp onto my gallery later.
Here are some closer looks at some of the parts.

Image
The head was the most important and difficult part. It took up 30% of the paper.

Image
The bird was added on because I had some extra paper on the empty arm.

Image
The ankle bracelts and sandals were added to give extra detail and take up extra paper. Ironically, I tried so hard to make the legs not be too long, but I ended up making them a bit too short. #-o

Wow! All of these are so great! Nice work to all!

Here is my own contribution:

The first thing I thought of when I saw the topic was the cover of the book "The Jungle", by Upton Sinclair. Specifically, the cover I used for inspiration is the 2001 reprint of the American classic, which I included for reference. Good luck to all future entries!

Another fairly productive month, with 4 nice entries.
I has written long detailed responses to each person's model, but it was all lost when I refreshed the page :x  .
I'll just do a quick summary, and perhaps I'll edit in more details later.

Disclaimer: I'm fairly new here, so my decision may not be that well made, but I will do my best :) .

Everyone had a quite interesting interpretation of the topic this month. If the challenge was called Monthly Design and Presentation challenge, I would have said that -sebl- is the winner. However, I believe that these challenges are meant to focus mainly on the design and less so on the presentation. So in my opinion, the winner is Tony Koppers with his creatively interpreted cow. I really liked its shape and apparent structure. (I assessed his models seperately, as I thought that his submission counted as two different models.)

I will create the March Design Challenge topic, and Tony Koppers will judge.
