Re: Monthly folding challenge: October 2015

Post by firstfold »

I’ve been viewing these entries on a daily basis and have change my mind three times.
I could find a reason for each and every entry to be chosen as first place so I will state these reasons and assign no second place. These are great ideas and all worthy of further development. I have to choose a first place so I will reluctantly do this.

Clearly the most ambitious fold was “Catwoman” by Joe Origami. It also represents something that is different from what might be expected for this category and therefore adds new unique fold to the field of origami. I believe this fold has the most potential for future development. Try working on just the face then see how that might be incorporated into the full model. Continue shaping the hands and upper body.

The most unique entry was “Lion-Duck” by Nepafarious. I think it has the feel of “Art-Deco” art. When you view “Origami Cats” as a Web search, you will find nothing like it. The color change is simple – yet effective. The shaping is artistically handled. This model stands as created as a worthy fold. For future development, I would love to see “What would a Cat (or dog or elephant) folded by Van Gogh or Salvador Dali” look like.

For a more complex use of color and shaping, I would choose “Origami Cat” by Rootborst. I actually like his earlier model (done in April) a bit more. Perhaps the more natural appearance of color change of the new model was achieved at the expense of what I considered a more “Cat-Like” appearance in the earlier model. Is there a way to combine the two effects together?

My winner is mostly an emotional reaction to the playfulness yet simplicity of Anna’s (Origami_8) “Playful Kitten”. The model lived up to its name. I did want to see a side view of this model to see if I had the same reaction to a different view. My next reaction was, take this model and fold it with a heavy copper sheet (without the tail). Then fold the other end of the kitten from another sheet. Then use the two folded sheets as book ends.

Anna (Origami_8) will judge the next Challenge. I hope you all enjoy this next challenge – I think you might find it poetic.

Congratulations anna. Thanks for the feedback.
After taking the picture I notice I forgot some shaping on the front legs, so this version looks more static and less playfull then my earlier fold. There was better light on the on the other version. In short; I agree that earlier version was better. Thanks again for the feedback.

Congrats Anna!

Can't say I'm not sorry I didn't take the prize, but I like the appraisal. "Most unique model" has a nice sound to it.

Thank you everyone!

@firstfold: It's a bit complicated right now, but if you remind me in December, I can send you the side pictures. The kitten however is supposed to be viewed from the front. Initially I wanted to incorporate the kitten as part of a one sheet scene, therefore getting a nice back was not my primary concern. Let's see whether I will ever finish the full model.
