We have an exciting competition for all of you origami gurus! If you are passionate about origami, if you like designing new things and have the technical know-how, you are more than welcome to participate and earn £250!

The Challenge:

Design an expandable/contractable box, any size you want. Keep in mind that we are going to use very heavy-duty cardboard when we assemble it ourselves, so you should take this into consideration. The box should have the following features:

- Expandable and contractable in both width and height.
- No more than 6 separate parts/pieces (the less, the better)
- Durable in both modes
- Easy to expand and contract
- Easy to assemble
- Simple and elegant design
- Flat bottom
- You are NOT allowed to use glue.
- You are allowed to use nuts and bolts.

Submission requirements:

Please send your designs as a PDF file to gdragiev1@gmail.com

The PDF file should include:

- Detailed drawing of the design (each piece should be drawn separately and sizes should be given)
- At least 4 pictures of the ready product (expanded and contracted)
- Detailed description of how to assemble the box
- Detailed description of how the box expands and contracts

Each participant is allowed to submit no more than 5 different designs. The more designs you submit, the greater your chance to win!

The deadline of your submissions is 12/09/2016

After this date we will review all the designs and we will announce the winner on Sunday 18/09/2016 by 19:00pm. The winner will be announced here on the forum and he/she will be contacted by email. We are going to use the same e-mail address you used to submit your designs.
The payment will be either by cheque or by paypal, whichever is more convenient for you.

This sounds interesting. Do you intend to use one of the designs in a commercial setting?

Yes I'm interested in learning that as well. This seems sort of less like a competition and more like they didn't want to commission an engineer or professional artist like Lang to design it.

This is absolutely a tough challenge, considering the time... I think the given date for the deadline is too early :(

Definitely, considering the thickness of the paper and that TWO dimensions have to change

Do you intent on telling the purpose of this challenge? It seems like someone may take advantage on one's work. I shall recommend you to be quite transparent with your intentions.

Couldn't you just use the boxes they sell for moving. They are thick cardboard and flat foldable. Although not in both dimensions. Still this sounds indeed as cheap way for a company too get some nice boxes.

No one is putting a firearm to anyone's head to do this. If you don't like it don't do it. 250 euros might not sound like much to you to sell a design, but it might sound like a lot to someone who doesn't have 250 Euros.

That's assuming the little dohicky before the 250 is indeed a Euro symbol. Could be a kopek symbol for all I know. Stupid American here.

That's the symbol for pounds steingar. And I agree, I do wish to know if it will be used in a commercial setting but I'm not critizicing the initiative per se.

I've been thinking about it a little and I don't think I'd be able to make it with less than 10 separate parts; that's four more than the minimum requirement.

Hi guys,

Thank you so much for your responses and I would like to apologize for the late reply. Given your comments, it seems that I haven't taken into consideration many aspects of an origami making, given that I don't have any experience. So far, I have received two models, from Hyun Seok Kang and Charles Santee. I loved both designs, but Charles' model seems more viable for what I am trying to make.

Charles is a very passionate origami master who I felt has a strong moral values and a genuine interest in supporting the beautiful art of origami making. As per his request, there is a link below t his work and I would like to let you all know that the challenge prize funds will be donated to a charity of his choice - The British Origami Society.

The idea of producing an expandable/collapsible box/case that can sustain different meteorologic conditions on a daily basis do seem challenging. That's why I decided to keep the challenge alive and maybe create a community around it, so feel free to submit ideas and ask questions.

Here is the link to Charles' work: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ja4ala81ddsxv ... x.pdf?dl=0

Thank you all!

Victor

Congratulations Charles! And what a nice thing to do with the money :).

PS: Damn... I thought that the "no more than six separate parts" meant segments free of edges and creases in the finished box :P.

firstfold, do you know what's the purpose of the box? I'm really curious about it :).
