Monthly Design Challenge / May 2017

Post by yagowe »

The theme for May will be "Office". This could be office equipment (copiers, coffee makers), office supplies (staplers, pens), office furniture (desks, conference tables), or anything else that would be at home in an office environment.

Rules:
1. single sheet of square paper
2. no cuts, no glue

firstfold will be the judge this month.

I was gonna make a stapler, but it uses a rectangle and I haven't made the paper yet.

I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem but, where I'm from, we have a thing called bat season. And during bat season, if your place of work falls along the nightly flight path of the bats (and mine does) you'll find bats in your office semi-regularly (and I do). We have to put up signs every year, warning people not to handle the bats.

I know this is an unconventional thing to have in your office and I'll understand if I'm judged to be well off topic but bat season and the looming prospect of finding one of these in my office put me in the mood to design a new bat model.

OK, it's May 31,at 9:30pm and I put together something in under 10 minutes. It's extremely low quality, I know, but it's better than nothing
Here is my pushpin (or thumbtack?)

I am going to begin judging this challenge by giving Justin my highest praise. Based on just visual appearance you might think I should easily choose Justin as the winner. His entry is neatly folded and designed in such a way that the folds can be a clean recognizable representation of the object folded. For these reasons alone I had a difficult time not choosing Justin as the winner
Not only that, Justin has won the monthly challenge 6 times. I believe that only two other people have had more wins. Here are links to his winning entries. The following models are all extremely well folded , well designed, and very creative.

I also give Justin many points for the creative way in which he described the model so it could be included for this challenge. I am just a little uncomfortable in making the stretch from the topic to the model presented.
When I judge a monthly challenge I always look up on line to see if I can find comparable models. The problem for Justin that a search of “Origami Bats” reveals hundreds of different ways to fold a bat. A few of these are just masterpieces. Realistic bat models first appeared in books in the 1960’s. When I did the same kind of search for “Origami Pushpin”: or “Origami Thumbtack” I generally found either flat two dimensional models or simple folds stuck in the middle with a metal pin or nail or brad. There were few if any models that were 3-D and made entirely out of paper. You could of course argue that argue that similar models a folded to represent either a mushroom or a certain type of flower but a 3-D representation of a thumbtack is very uncommon and therefore a creative approach.
My other Reasons for choosing NeverCeasetoCrease are somewhat selfish. I have just got to see what Justin will come up with for the next challenge. If I make Justin the winner he can not be considered for the next challenge. Please, please, please Justin enter the June challenge.
Next I think if I had been judging April’s Challenge, that NeverCeasetoCrease would have won with his baseball cap. I can guarantee the winner of that month (Firstfold) would not have minded at all. I hope this win will encourage NeverCeasetoCrease to continue entering the monthly challenge.
NeverCeasetoCrease will judge the monthly challenge for June. Congratulation, I have nothing but praise for both entries.

The challenge for June is designed to get as many entries as possible so whether you are a beginner or a seasoned designer please enter.
The topic is "Pick a Winner". Look over all the topics for the past 10 years and choose one. The rule are simple - anything is allowed.

Thanks Doc, this month's challenge sounds awesome and I fully intend to enter. In fact, I don't think I've ever been more excited to have lost a monthly challenge.

PS: Six times? I think I'll have to go through the challenges and see how many times I've lost just to deflate my ego.
