Monthly Folding Challenge - July 2007

Post by Fishgoth »

'The return of the D20 challenge'

Your challenge this month is to fold an origami fantasy monster. The term 'D20' comes from role-play systems, where there are a large number of fantasy monsters. For inspiration, you might like to look at 'Dungeons and Dragons' type pictures on the net. There are models in various books, such as John Montroll's origami zodiac book, or the Witches and Monsters book by Annibal Voyer.

Please pay attention to the rules very closely:

1) The origami
-You many use any number of sheets.
-The sheets do not have to be square.
-Colour in the model must come from the sheets themselves, so not widespread painting, although dots for eyes are allowed.
-No cutting.
-No glue. Pieces must be held together using lock folds.
-Methylcellulose is allowed.
-Sunburst and Fishgoth (me) are disqualified from winning, of course ;)

2) The design
-It can be your own design or someone elses. Please state whose design it is.
-It must be folded by you.
-It must not have been displayed anywhere on the net prior to 30th June 2007, and preferably folded for this challenge.
-You will get extra points for your own design, and for original designs that have not been folded before!

3) The subject
-It must be a fantasy monster, such as a Manticore, or a Gorgon, or a Centaur, or a Catoblepas, etc.
-Think 'Lord of the Rings' or 'Dungeons and Dragons' or 'Ancient greek monsters', etc
-Have a look at the fantasy gaming gallery on Joseph Wu's website.
-Wookies, Klingons, etc are not fantasy.
-Nor are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spiderman, etc
-Folding a Stag Beetle and calling it 'A Giant Beetle' will get you shot.
-Likewise will folding a 'Mutant Slugomegahydolisk', or a monster that no one has ever heard of.
-My own personal rule - No Kamiya Satoshi Ancient Dragons. We've all seen this model 100 times on this forum. Let's try coming up with something else...

Have fun. Sunburst has been invited to be the judge for this contest, so, let the folding begin!

Anyway, here is one for starters. Beholder, folded and designed by me from a single uncut square of foil-backed paper.

Stupid question: do Pokemon count? I know they probably don't, but I just want to make sure. Of course even if they do I won't be able to use my Mew :(

No. Pokemon do not count. Pokemon are not set in a dungeons and dragons style world. Some pokemon look a bit like Dragons, Rocs, or what have you. The rest I would put into the same category as Klingons or Wookies.

Here are some previous examples : viewtopic.php?t=469&postdays=0&postorde ... 20&start=0

And here is a list of monsters (from Monster Manual 1, I think) that should give people ideas. Click on a name, and then on the small picture of the eye next to the monsters name for a picture.

Does that mean all the creatures listed in that website are usable as subjects?

Yes, I think all of those are usable subjects.

I am pretty sure the answer is no, but just for clarification, are fantasy creatures that are not d20 still viable?

Absolutely. If you want to fold a Broo or a Walktapus (Runequest) or a Shoggoth (Tunnels and Trolls) or a Clawbeast or a Bloodbeast (Fighting fantasy) or a Fell Creature or an Oliphant (Lord of the Rings) then feel fine.

Just no facehuggers or Andorans or pikachus, etc. Now, can we see some models?

'Merfolk' are on the d20 list, so, yes, a mermaid would be viable.

Could a kind mod transfer all of this chat to the 'discussions' thread, so we can keep this one free for pictures?

He's another one from me - an Athach, a three armed giant. Folded from a single uncut square of foil backed paper. The three hands come from the three corners, and the head and face from the other. The legs are box pleated from two centre points, and a series of reverse folds create the colour change and pleats of the beard.
