Monthly Folding Challenge - July 2007
Posted: June 30th, 2007, 12:32 pm
'The return of the D20 challenge'
Your challenge this month is to fold an origami fantasy monster. The term 'D20' comes from role-play systems, where there are a large number of fantasy monsters. For inspiration, you might like to look at 'Dungeons and Dragons' type pictures on the net. There are models in various books, such as John Montroll's origami zodiac book, or the Witches and Monsters book by Annibal Voyer.
Please pay attention to the rules very closely:
1) The origami
-You many use any number of sheets.
-The sheets do not have to be square.
-Colour in the model must come from the sheets themselves, so not widespread painting, although dots for eyes are allowed.
-No cutting.
-No glue. Pieces must be held together using lock folds.
-Methylcellulose is allowed.
-Sunburst and Fishgoth (me) are disqualified from winning, of course
2) The design
-It can be your own design or someone elses. Please state whose design it is.
-It must be folded by you.
-It must not have been displayed anywhere on the net prior to 30th June 2007, and preferably folded for this challenge.
-You will get extra points for your own design, and for original designs that have not been folded before!
3) The subject
-It must be a fantasy monster, such as a Manticore, or a Gorgon, or a Centaur, or a Catoblepas, etc.
-Think 'Lord of the Rings' or 'Dungeons and Dragons' or 'Ancient greek monsters', etc
-Have a look at the fantasy gaming gallery on Joseph Wu's website.
-Wookies, Klingons, etc are not fantasy.
-Nor are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spiderman, etc
-Folding a Stag Beetle and calling it 'A Giant Beetle' will get you shot.
-Likewise will folding a 'Mutant Slugomegahydolisk', or a monster that no one has ever heard of.
-My own personal rule - No Kamiya Satoshi Ancient Dragons. We've all seen this model 100 times on this forum. Let's try coming up with something else...
Have fun. Sunburst has been invited to be the judge for this contest, so, let the folding begin!
