Origami is like food. You can love it and be obese. Or you can hate it and be and be a"cute". Or you can be a fail and your just that. A fail. Flickr : http://www.flickr.com/photos/76647015@N08/?saved=1

TWO DAYS LEFT: TODAY AND TOMORROW!

merryclaude (pliagedepapier.com): ZOETROPE

For the inter-forum challenge this month, I thought of a few things, then after a few tries I was set on this idea: a zoetrope: a what? What does it eat in winter? Wikipedia will tell you!

Here is the zoetrope; you can now animate your creations with simplicity:

Image

I could describe its operation for hours, but nothing beats a good old movie. You can see that the air is captured by four fins that allow it to rotate constantly. In the first part of the movie, I show you the rotation, then the inside and then the view that we have through the slots. Please excuse my bad lighting. This cannot do the job as effectively as our current computer robots, but frankly, I find it interesting to see and understand how a zoetrope works! You may find that the image is not very clear, this is not due to a malfunction of my zoetrope, but of my camera does not take the same number of frames per second than the number of slot passing before it by seconds. An exact multiple would have worked better. In short, what you see is the best I could do with the resources I had. What's important is there!

Who wants to see it in operation?

INGREDIENTS
  • Zoetrope: Washi / square / 22 inch
  • WIND: It rotates with a constant stream of wind. You can blow on it or give it a rotary motion with your hands or use a more constant source of wind, as is the case here, a hair drier
  • Plate: Placed under the zoetrope to help keep it in place. With two sources of wind, of appropriate speed, angle and distance, it could have spun without this plate
  • Wind catchers: 4 curved fins are bent around the zoetrope to catch the wind and allow it to rotate well. They are folded in the same square as the zoetrope
  • Figures: Box pleating / kraft / square / 3 inches
  • Fixing characters: Preliminary base / washi / square / 1 inch
MORE INFORMATION
I searched long time to find how to operate it using the least amount of outside help. I thought of gears, a turntable or a stick. Then I decided to fold a pointed base, a flange for stability and fins to capture the wind. I used two external aids, a plate to help it stay in place during spins and a hair drier to make it spin at constant speed.
The fixation pieces and the characters are removeable, you can replace them with whatever you want. For example, a simple traditional strip of paper with drawings can work very well.
Blue rectangles are inserted within the central base; it is possible to insert other parts around it to make an animation that’s even more advanced and sensational!

The zoetrope was designed to help perform the animation of our creations, and since it is itself an origami, it is even more interesting! It is adaptable in size and in number of slots all around for infinite possibilities.

This could be the solution to animate our diagrams and creations!

Nguyen Minh Duc (Mr_D) from Vietnam Origami Forum designed: SUNDIAL

From 1 uncut rectangle, color change in the hour-hand (not really clear in the photos).
It is a pity that it wasn't sunny in Hanoi to show it working and to take a better photo.

Eduardo_ct from Pajarita created:

JENGA-GAMI

As the name suggests it's the popular jenga game but made in origami. The idea was from Eduardo_ct's little sister.

Since the jenga-gami has colored blocks the colored die indicates what colored block must you retrieve next.

For the blocks, square sheets of 4 X 4 in. folded in five equal parts.

For the die, six pieces of approximately 0.5 X 1.5 in. paper.

Image

PENCIL CASE

It's resistant and it can lock really well. It uses 14 X 14 in. tissue foil with an outer layer of black and wrapping paper so it can resist very well.

Eduardo_ct wishes congratulate everyone for the incredible models.

Andrey Ermakov from LoveOrigami made his: EGG-BOX

elephant hide
8 in. X 2 ft.

This model is very useful in practical application - has many variations and it is very easy to prepare.
Very often we are faced with the problem of carrying and storing objects of round shape. Every now and then they lost, or as the eggs - crush, etc. So, this origami-box is easier to help overcome these troubles. Assembling the model does not require deep skills and expertise in origami, everyone can fold it. Box size depends only on the size of the cell and how many partitions you need inside ("a" x "b", and - the number of horizontal sections, b - number of sections in the vertical) ...

I note that the move in this box can not only eggs, it could be tennis balls, golf balls, billiard balls, etc.
The box has good shock absorption, since cell sections are in limbo. Therefore, based on the properties of the prepared material (paper), it may be indispensable for transporting fragile items of glass, crystal, china porcelain - glasses, cups, etc.

LAMPSHADE: by Lukasheva Ekaterina (Oriart)

Ekaterina, who is helping with the Russian forums in the challenge, IS fully participating with the challenge with this model. We talked it over between the four us and made that decision. Best of luck Ekaterina!

Using this simple device you can change the whole appearance of your interior. Just 30 simple units can add romance to the room. Very suitable as night lamps, for cafés or restaurants.

Can be used with power-saving lamps (or with any other not very hot lamps). Just put the lamp inside the modular and turn it on. Some areas of the modular show only one layer of the paper, so it will be a very bright lamp.

Made of 30 rectangles of semi-transparent crisp paper, approx. 4 X 5 in. each. The final size of the model is 8 in.

Image

Lamp for the challenge by _Ekaterina, on Flickr

Merits

--Other paper proportions and sizes can also be used successfully

--Each unit is made with only 14 folds, so not only paper but very thick materials can be used for this modular.

--The folds can be easily made with special grooving equipment, so half-finished pieces for this modular can be produced industrially.

--You can make other geometrical forms: non-symmetrical or more complex.

--Units hold together very securely without any glue.

--Due to the possibility of the industrial production, you can use these units as the construction set for children or their parents ;-)

--The lamp can be easily disassembled and transported as the set of flat pieces. Assembly and disassembly don’t affect the units badly.

Actually I didn’t have enough proper paper to make it big enough to be compatible with my lamp (my lamp is big), so I had to make “lighted” pictures without being closed behind the lamp. But I guarantee that, with smaller lamps or with bigger units, the lampshade can be completely closed.

Thanks to organizers of the challenge, cause it forced me finally to make this lamp!

Handled cup/mug

I have invented a water holding cup that, with a little tweaking turns into a teacup, beer bug or tankard

it has an integrated handle and was fashioned out of a single sheet of A4 paper, no cuts, folds only. I am a little late, sorry, but hope it is considered for the useful challenge none the less

I have development notes and more pictures at my blog: http://www.wonko.info/365origami/?p=2814

Thank you for participating. Specially thank you to Ekaterina, Aurele, and Quyet for making it possible to unite the six forums despite the language barrier. You three made it possible.

I feel overwhelmed with all your models and participation. Now all that is left is for you to help us choose a winner :).

I want to dedicate my latest model (GRABBER) to you all. Along with my bellows, it's my most creative useful model. All of you inspired me to try my best... thank you.

Image

Image

Of course, it wouldn't be the same if there wasn't a video. Feel free to leave a comment: VIDEO OF THE GRABBER IN ACTION

Two things before I finish this message:

1. Can I ask you a favor? I would REALLY REALLY appreciate it if you would post your model in our collective blog: NEORIGAMI. Not the diagrams, just images and some info :)

2. I would like to make a book from this challenge! What do you think? I still have to work out the details, but be certain that I'll make an offer that you will enjoy.

You'll hear more about this soon ;)

I'm really sorry you didn't arrive in time wonko. The good news is that you're also invited into the book project :).
