Hi All! - Today, in his Twitter feed, Kota Imai had up the following picture of four different papers:



and with the following text in Japanese:

色比較
左からネクタイの包装紙、チャコールカラペ、薄葉紙、黒ガンピ

I'm interested in that third paper in from the left, which Google Translate helpfully translates either as "charcoal Kara Bae" or "chacorcarape." Anyone know anything about this paper--what its properties are, and how nice it is for folding? I'm just curious--thanks to anyone that can provide information!

He said in this photo that he uses a Japanese paper called Karape.

The names sound the same and it may just be a google translate error that causes the difference.

This is taken from the happy folding website on the review for Karaperapisu.
"We start with a unique, iridescent paper. Its name, as far as we know, has no real meaning, and it may come from the word "Karape" (カラペ - Ka Ra Pe) which is a shortening of the English term "Color Wrapping Paper". Rapisu has no meaning, but it does roll nicely on your tongue."
The paper in the review looks similar to origami shops iridescent shadow fold papers.

Since they don't look much like the papers pictured I would say its just a general kind of paper that you would probably have little to no chance of finding anywhere but Japan. Good luck anyways!

Interesting. Thanks very much for that information--I'll keep an eye out for a source for the paper and let everyone know if I find some!

This topic is fairly old, but I figured I'd mention that Origami-Shop now carries karape paper. It seems to be a decent price as well.
