55x55cm red paper

Post by NeverCeaseToCrease »

Hello,

I am folding a baseball hat for my friend that I'm hoping to be large enough to fit his head. I need a solid red sheet of paper of any quality, just as long as it's about 55cm (22in), a little bigger or smaller is ok. An online store would be ideal.

Any suggestion is appreciated! Thank you!!!

If you want the cp for the baseball hat I'll use: Image

The first paper that came to mind was mulberry paper of some kind (unryu, hanji, etc.), but you would probably have to backcoat 2-3 sheets to get a good thickness. The standard size is 25x37" (63x92cm), so that should be large enough for what you need.
It's available at Blick stores (though not necessarily in red), or you can order from http://www.mulberrypaperandmore.com/default.aspx
After the fall, we rise.

For this kind of models I'd recommend quite thick paper like Elephant hide. There are a lot of papers like that here: https://www.origami-shop.com/en/elephan ... 3_618.html

Apart from the Elephant hide that probably would be ideal, you could also take any thick watercolour paper. Those come in a large variety of colours and thicknesses.
Don't you have any art supply stores nearby that you could visit?

I don't usually find the paper with the properties I need in the color I wish. In those cases I paint the paper myself. For what you're describing I would use a thick brown kraft paper (90 g/m2) of the kind used for brown paper bags and I would paint it red. Vinyl and acrylic paints usually makes the paper more suitable for folding.

Thank you so much, everybody!

I don't know why I didn't think of painting it. #-o I have 53x53 cm paper of other colors, just not red, so I think I'll try that. Although, I've never painted anything before so if you have tips please tell me. For instance, would it be better to spray it to avoid the brush marks?

But, thanks for your suggestions anyways! I'll keep them in mind if painting doesn't work.

And, I'll be sure to post a picture when (if  ) I complete it!

Spray paint works well for tissue-foil and probably other things. It's probably not very pH balanced though, if you care...

Glad that my idea helped :).

Since you asked for tips... use masking tape around the whole edge of the paper, attaching it to a board before painting. Don't cut it to the proper size until you've painted and the paint is dry. Do both things no matter what you use for painting. Personally I wasn't to happy with spray paints but maybe you'll like them more than me: too much waste and a stronger smell than with other paints. I'd recommend using a brush or sponge with vinyl or acrylic paints. In my experience, brush marks aren't that visible once the paint has dried.

I have successfully folded a Phillies baseball hat! It's too small for me but his head is smaller than mine, so fingers crossed...

I realized that an easier way might be to unfold an existing model made of big red paper that I hadn't shaped much. The obvious candidate for me was a house with windows, since there were no curves, crimps, or crumples. Even better, the house's grid was mostly 32x32 and my hat's grid was 24x24, so many of the pleats lined up. The end result has some unnecessary creases, but it looks ok. I'll post a picture when I can.

I'm sorry that I didn't use any of your suggestions, I know, shame on me. But as I'm running low on large paper of other colors, I'll come back to this post next time I have the same problem. Thanks for your help, everyone!

Check out a photographic supply outfit in your municipality. Photo backdrops are often made of paper and huge. They come in colors.
