sorry to bump up this old topic, but I have a question. Firstly though, thankyou Anna for making that photograph guide to fold the scales, its really good. I have practiced folding the fish and the scales seperatly, and now I am ready to attemp to fold the full model. What is the smallest size of paper I could fold it from while keeping my sanity intact? 8-[

If you can't fold it, try a bazooka.

What sort of paper are you using?

If you're going to take a shot at all 900 scales, I recommend at least 18 inches (45 cm) square.

It's probably not a bad idea to try a smaller one first, i.e. you could try one out of a 6 incsh (15 cm) square, but only with 100 scales. The scales would be too large relative to the size of that fish, but they would be the same size as they will end up on your larger fish, so you'll have a chance to see if they are possible with your paper before you potentially waste a large sheet.

Thanks! I am using Tissue foil (which I have yet to make). Is there a certain aspect ratio for the sides that makes it easy to measure everthing out, or does it matter?

I recommend making the sides of your square in a ratio of 1:1. :D

Seriously, for a 18" square I believe the mountain folds for the pleats work out to be about 5/16" apart.
