I really really REALLY don't get how you guys are folding this. I have the instructions and everything, but it's the precreasing that I can't get. I divided into 3rds, and then tried to copy the precreasing ... didn't work. Can anyone help me out on this?

Here's a picture of my horrible attempt:

well, dividing into 3rds is the right way to start. After that, you can divide the bottom 2/3 into 4x6, then add the diagonals. Um, the top third can be folded in half horizontally, and the main diagonal up there simply goes from the center to the 1/3 and 2/3 vertical marks at the top of the 2/3 section, if that makes any sense...

what exactly are you having trouble with?

It's the mountain/valley thing that I'm having trouble with. Starting in thirds doesn't seem to do anything for me ... I tried going back and forth from there and the width of the precreases were uneven and I don't get how to get the pleats right. It's so frustrating and I really want to be able to do it, but this is where I get stuck. Looking at the paper, it's hard to see what goes where ... I feel hopeless when folding this.

Have you checked page 4 of this same thread? It shows it clearly how to do it.

Brimstone: That's collapsing it. I'm sure I would be fine with that, but all of the precreasing everywhere doesn't make sense. If I had those precreases exactly like the first picture, I wouldn't have to worry about anything.

Sorry i got confused when you said the mountain and valley things.

Try this, divide the square into 24 x 24 and then try again to make the CP. as in page 1 of this thread.

To divide in 24's, you first divide in thirds and then each section in 8th's. Go slowly and do not find a 24th and start from there alternating mountains and valleys, this will only propagate the error and you will end up with what you have now, uneven pleats.

My girlfriend and I tried that ... we have a 24x24 grid. We can't get all of the folds since there are so many for the grid. The little diamonds and everything are very difficult.

Try printing out the crease pattern, and then folding along the printed lines.

I guess that's our only other option. IS the CP on this thread large enough, or should I draw it up myself?

I just folded into thirds again to see how this model breaks down ... it seems everyone says the waterbombs are in the middle section. I drew them up quickly, but it doesn't seem to leave a lot of room for the other parts. I took a picture and wanted to know if I'm just imagining things, or are the waterbombs in the wrong spot?

No, the waterbombs don't go there. Take a closer look at the CP, if this is you first try I would recommend folding the whole grid before attempting to put any diagonals in. You can count the numbers of segments from the bottom and from the sides to find where the waterbombs belong.

Hope this helps.

So I'm guessing the 24x24 is the way to go then? When I look at the instructions Joisel made, he did it in 28x28, so I'm not sure what grid to do. 24x24 seems a little much since there are a lot of unneeded creases ...

Follow Joisel's instructions, and fold the whole grid. When you are a little more confident at CPs and box-pleating, you can miss out some unneccessary lines. But if you're new to them (or if you're just plain lazy) then fold the whole grid. Depending on the type of paper, it shouldn't show too badly on the finished model.

I think I know what I was doing wrong ... the Tanteidan instructions for the dwarf are a slightly different CP than this one. The waterbombs in Tanteidan start much later than the ones in this forum. The CP's posted here have them start around the fourth pleat in, whereas Tanteidan has it as it as the sixth one in.

EDIT:

I forgot to mention ... for the people looking for a longer legged figure similar to the dwarf, I came across Sebastian Arellano's Rock Star model. Looks really cool (I'm a guitarist). Here are the links to the finished model and CP ... which is a variation on Joisel's Dwarf.

P.s. Would the grid for this Rock Star be 24x24 as well? I can never tell with these things. I'm thinking 28x28 because it looks a lot like Joisel's version of the Dwarf in Tanteidan 13. Any thoughts?

I want to eventually fold this one day, then I'll have my own little guitarist ;)
