Re: Variations of the magic ball
There is the "Dragon's Egg" (great example made by Yuri Shumakov on youtube), and there is also the Spiky Cuboctahedron, which is a "Spike ball"....maybe close to a "magic ball"?

Re: Variations of the magic ball
The magic ball is a flat foldable corrugation with the sides folded/glued together into a tube shape. So theoretically every corrugation that is flat foldable can be turned into a magic ball. The variations should be endless. You just need to make the corrugation wide enough to be able to make a tube. One example that should work out pretty well is Jeremy Shafer's Slithering Snake Skin expanded to a 1x2 paper with lets say a division into 32 on the long side.
So you should rather ask for suitable corrugations instead of variations of the magic ball.

Does anyone know if the Author of the Magic ball is known? Can't seem to find out online.
